Today's car seems to get around a track pretty well..

Would love to take my Z06 there, maybe something more local one day...
Nice car; unfortunately not one I'd want to be in during a accident. A local kid (teenager) was in the news just recently after crashing his into another vehicle, dying in the process.
You'd be borderline crazy to drive a car like that on the roads here, I'd say almost the same thing for many (much more "common") Lotus(es/i?) even.
The Atom is a track car for disciplined/skilled drivers e.g. notice how the driver never passed on the right even though he could have "safely", even when impeded for longish times. IOW, not for North Americans. :) Also notice how most of the DBs who didn't move right when they should have were driving boxes with big spoilers. The usual suspects, and not Porsches...
The driver, if he owns the car, probably bought it out of his spare change, if he wasn't given it outright. He's the kind of guy you want owning your cars.

.. and those things are sixty four thousand bucks.
Is it safe?
Handling looks superb.
Yes it does, and as far as I can tell there isn't any balancing of under/over steer, the guy just kinda drives it around not yet approaching the limits of adhesion.
Honda motor does the job too.
That is the slightly eccentric supercharged version.
Ariel also made 25 completely deranged Atom 500 V8 versions with a bespoke 3L motor.
A bit more expensive (ok a lot more) but it also produces 909hp per ton while a Veyron 'only' manages 530.
Quite crafty that John Hartley
The Atom V8 is also the 2nd fastest car ever around the TopGear test track only beaten by the $1.6million Pagani Huayra. It was 1.7sec faster than VWs Veyron Super Sport and 4 seconds quicker than the Ferrari Enzo. The Atom V8 cost a comparatively paltry $235k.
Radical produce the SR8 which also has a Hayabusa-based V8. It holds the Nürburgring North Loop record for street legal cars at 6min 48sec. Yours for $162k.
Doesn't look road legal though...
