... But I doubt it. I think it is more likely a pencil-nose, money-pitching mentality. But I don't know.
I doubt weight because the cars I am taking about are 2+ tonnes & over 5 meters long and carry 80+ litres of fuel. I'm not talking about sports cars or little four cylinder buzz boxes.
When I fill up it always $70 to $100. I can't imagine putting in $15 or $20 unless it was to top-up before a long stint or something.
I think putting fuel in the car is the cheapest part of ownership, especially for a decent car and especially in Australia.

Was a thread on Ferrari, assumed you were referring to sports cars mostly. If you're talking about regular passenger cars, then I agree, I don't get it.
My Z06 I put in either $50 or $60 depending on where the tank is (try to never go much below 1/4 tank). The mini-van I generally fill to first click or $70, whichever comes first.
...I should of explained myself.
I went off on a tangent about seeing a Ferrari in a parking lot for public transport. Which seems weird to me, even if the folks were not availing themselves of the public transport and just using the facility to park their vehicle. I am very fussy where I park a decent car. (the reason I also have a town car is to park in amongst the great unwashed lol)
I was specifically talking about passenger cars which cost over $100K.
I usually fill up when the car gets to around a quarter full. I go to the same service station where we have an account and usually an attendant fills the car up or I will do it if they are busy. I will fill it up and do about 3 or 4 clicks. I don't bother about even numbers or set amounts, whatever the amount is, it is. I have always done this since I was a teenager.

Very few service stations here nowadays. The only one I can think of that MIGHT have service is the "Husky" station, and they don't have 94 octane gas by any means. Service stations went the way with corded phones.
Same in the van, whenever it clicks. In my car I don't ever completely fill.
... The station I use actually has self-service bowsers but they usually have 2 attendants pumping fuel for people as a courtesy. It is one of the reasons I go there.
It also has a 3-bay workshop.
We use 98 premium fuel.
They are friendly and run accounts which is also becoming rare.
One of my best mates owns four petrol stations around the area but he doesn't run accounts and is the primary reason I don't go there.
A bit of servility still goes a long way in any type of retailing.
