it would have been splashdown. I remember reading that the strong head winds and modifications to the B25 made liftoff much shorter than expected. Only one plane dipped below the ship's horizon and climbed back into view.
An amazing feat. Esp considering this mission was done 100% in enemy territory. And the Zeros had nearly complete command of the skies, at the time.

Surprise.
Most of the Zeros were in China, SE Asia and the Pacific.
The Zero had not been in production long. There may have been some Claudes, and some Oscars in Japan.
I'd be willing to bet that Japan didn't have any early warning radar yet. They were always behind on that front right through to the end.
IF there had been any Zeros up there would have been higher casualties among the Mitchells.

Right. The Japanese play little attention to home defense, until after this raid. Most Claudes were being used in advanced training schools. In 1942, I doubt any Oscars were stationed in Japan.
Japanese warlords were pretty pigheaded about defense. Like a Holy shield guarded their country.
