any experience with good air purifiers? would like to get some for my apartment, I'm also a smoker if that means anything.

What is a HEPA filter.
HEPA is a type of pleated mechanical air filter. It is an acronym for "high efficiency particulate air [filter]" (as officially defined by the U.S. Dept. of Energy). This type of air filter can theoretically remove at least 99.97% of dust, pollen, mold, bacteria, and any airborne particles with a size of 0.3 microns (µm). The diameter specification of 0.3 microns responds to the worst case; the most penetrating particle size (MPPS). Particles that are larger or smaller are trapped with even higher efficiency. Using the worst case particle size results in the worst case efficiency rating (i.e. 99.97% or better for all particle sizes).

Hi bullethead. How goes it? You want to get a HEPA air filter for particles and odors large enough or larger than needed for your room. Maybe the best bang for the buck are the Honeywell 50250 filters on the used market. It is said to filter down to .3 microns. They are well reviewed. I lucked out and got a Kenmore Progressive 335 for dirt cheap used. It moves a lot of air. I am ready for fire season.

What is the CAPACITY of the filter in question? I'll bet a smoker could clog on in a week...
0.3 Micron? You guys know how SMALL that is? And the air you let in when you open the door high admit several tens of thousands of such particles per cubic foot?
Not to mention your clothes! And BH being a SMOKER? OUCH!
The fabs I worked in ALL had 'double doors' AND a change room......You'd go into the change room and don your 'fab gear'......than go thru the double doors, a few at a time where you got an AIR SHOWER. And it didn't just blow air around, IN from the TOP, suchked out the bottom and filtered.
When we were bringing the place up, I measured particles and watched daily as the results kept getting better as they balanced the system and adjusted the amount ot 'make up air', drawn in fresh from outside and filtered before use.
Humidity was also controlled, but that's not generally a particle problem....
Too much is never enough
How much you wana bet pg? I only accept pure gold. No russian gold.

How fast a 0.3 micron filter clogs when exposed to REAL air?
I don't have hours / minutes / seconds for you, BUT it won't take long. You'll need stock in the company that makes the filters.....
Too much is never enough
" Over time, HEPA filters actually get more effective at capturing tiny particles. As a HEPA filter gets used, it gets filled up with dirt and particles. This improves the HEPA filter's ability to filter out the air."
"It's generally recommended to change them along these timelines: True HEPA: 8,760 usable hours or about every 12 months. Activated Carbon: 8,760 usable hours or about every 12 months."
Others say maybe every 1000 hours. Pre filters are recommended to be changed more often.

Yes....efficiency improves slightly as FLOW RATE decreases. Our fab ceiling was almost entirely filter. You could NOT feel the 'flow' but air was exchanged in the room 2x or so every minute......And humidified and with 'make up air' since some air was exhaused to the outside while NEW was brought in.....
but still and all? the HUGE load on sucha small filter thru the opening and closing of doors AND the smoking of ciggies and burning of candles? Not to mention skin shedding and 'other' normal activities.?
sorry...You really need to keep your eye on such a device for proper maintneance....
I would add one other item:
NEED. Unless you are trying to manufacture something which requires near-zero, or as close as practical, a 0.3 micron filter is just a number.....
Besides? sitting on a tabletop or floor is the wrong place. You'll inevitably have dead spots and pattern which you are not addressing.....Sit directly in the output flow?I measured a 45000 square foot fab. Call it an acre of area. It was MOSTLY a class 10 area with the back / service bays being roughly class 100.... This was before production started and I had was the ONLY person around and it was as late as midnite. I made 2 passes between about 4pm and midnite, with I think about 8 measurment locations......And an extension cord of about 200 feet!
Link is to some requirements for an 'ISO 7' room......It gets cleaner so that ISO 1 is VERY clean, indeed.
NOTE: Not sterile, just fewer and fewer particles. You'll see the charts whos 0.3 micron and that is ALWAYS a higher number.I would add that if you have a medical requirement, than you SHOULD be able to get some kind of prescription.....
Too much is never enough

...you need to vape to purify what's going into your lungs.
Otherwise purer air won't matter.
thanks, the tar protects me from... look it up... chemtrails!
...may be too late...
;)
Large, and a little noisy. Best left on all the time NOT HOME.
I have a cockatiel, and they shed a powder, like dusting powder from the feathers, so the cleaners keep that problem down.
I used to leave one one while at work. them off when i am home.
Now that I am retired, and home all the time, I leave one one set to low speed, 24/7 in the bathroom. Where it is least objectionable for noise.
Even in the bathroom, it cleans all the air in the apartment.
My second one I have in the bedroom and will turn it on high for a day if the air seems stuffy. I close the bedroom door to cut the noise.
Other types just do not do the job as well. The ion ones can cut the smoke better, but all they do is make the smoke cling to the walls and surfaces much more.
Bigger is way way better. The ones I have are 22"/24" tall and 18" diameter. With a big filter plus a cheap prefilter easy to replace. I have owed these for over 20 years and have not needed to replace the main HEPA filter. (Basically the main Hepa filter is like $120..)
The prefilter can be vacuumed off (it wraps around the HEPA filter as a sleeve) , and lasts about five years. The prefilter costs about $25.
If I smoked.. I would spray the prefilter through the vents with Febreze, to help it work at killing the smoke smell.
I used to own smaller ones and they basically burned out, got clogged.. Once I got the first big Honeywell HEPA, I never looked back. The second one I bought used at Goodwill for $20 Fantastic deal.
So I say go big to last.
Mine are still going strong, and may last another 20 years??
I think I will go with something like that a more industrial design, then add in the ozone/ionizer.
"I'm also a smoker if that means anything."
Sorry bullet, it means everything if you are selling anything that comes from your home.
Your buyers will smell and feel the tar, you should mention that you are a smoker in your current ads.
I don't usually sell any old equipment, I usually give it away.

to cycle and clean the air. I also smoke tobacco pipe as well as cigarettes.
..Why? For what purpose?
Why do you want clean air? (if you actually answer the question you "might" understand my posts in this thread)
Air purifiers may help suppress some of the smoke smell but they can't clean your breath or your clothes or soft furnishings.
Your home will always reek of stale cigarettes if you smoke inside.
IME any decent air purifier is going to cost you more than pocket change and a variety of technologies are needed for the best results. However none will work properly with cigarette smoke unless you physically thoroughly wash all soft furnishings in your home on a very regular basis (once a week) but you are still fighting a losing battle *if* you want "fresh" air within your abode.
Cheers.

when the escorts come over they complain that it smells like smoke.
ok?
... Good luck.

unlike your land, that's not allowed here.
where's the lecture about STDs etc....?

thanks for that :)
I was just trying to "make it stop"
cool?
... I'm not sure what you were trying to make stop?
But if it worked, you have achieved something.
Gosh, things are looking up.

as long as tobacco is legal I will smoke, and as long as hookers are illegal I will abstain.
Come on man do be so hard on the guy. He can do what he wants. A filter will reduce the smoking smell in the room. That's a good thing right?

I smoke occasionally (2 cigarettes a day), but I smoke outside. It's bad for my parrots and bad for the stereo. It leaves a residue on everything, and really stinks up the house. Filtration won't work well for a heavy smoker, and might be too late if he's been smoking inside for a long time.
Jack
...but you may have already heard it.
Smoking a couple of cigarettes a day is no better for you than smoking many more because you draw the smoke in deeper, hold it longer and smoke it to the end since you're depriving yourself.
I used to smoke 1 1/2 packs a day. Smelly habit. With 2 a day, I air out relatively quickly (others have commented on this).
I always inhaled it deeply, but rarely smoke to the end. But, I do enjoy them.
Jack
...glad you're cutting back.
Best of luck to you.
... I have never smoked but IME smokers can't smell their own smoke.
I have walked into a smokers room and tell them it reeks of smoke. They nearly always seem totally unaware of the smell.
Maybe BH will notice a difference with an air purifier, but I doubt it.
I'm not sure if BH ever has guests over but if he does they will be the only ones who notice, not BH himself.
Of course, I am only expressing my opinion. It maters not if BH, you or anybody else take it notice whatsoever. However I'd still like to express it if it is ok with you?
Cheers

I knew you'd respond that way. Filtering is good for him and or anyone else. You just wanted to burst his balloon.
E
T
.... You want me to agree with you.
If you were worried about what will be good for him you'd recommend he give up smoking, like I have advised him to do.
I know, you knew I'd respond this way.
Be a darl, regale the board with what I will post next. Tsk tsk, it gets a tad harder before the fact, doesn't it?
Your move.

its getting old and tired. Why wouldn't anyone want him to quit and why would I want you to agree with me? You can almost always be counted on to go negative, ya always have and probably always will.
E

... If he said in his initial post he wanted to please the hookers I would have made a different reply.

hookers are illegal here, I think where you come from it is ok though?
not a lecture, nothing from you on that.
Is smoking tobacco illegal in Australia? That might be why you are so violently opposed?
... Great logic.
Taking illicit drugs is illegal too, never stopped you though did it?
Blah blah blah ...

I follow the rules now. What I did in my youth is of no importance to you.
.. Except whatever you do is of no importance to me.
I could quote back so of your own posts, but I can't be bothered.
Maybe you need a valium?

maybe I am making stuff up?
... I bet you are the first person to have ever done so.
Next thing you know all the bright sparks will be taking this seriously.

3M Filtrete Ultra Clean Air Purifier (link below)
One in the bedroom, and one in my computer room. They're quiet and seem to pull a lot of crap out of the air. They do make smaller ones, depending on the square footage of the room you're using it in.
I don't smoke, but the 3M filters claim to remove smoke from the air.
"You won't come back from Fletcher-Munson curve"-Jan and Dean
the HEPA filters seems like a cool thing, I've already got a basic machine and I think I'll need something like Rod M pointed out however.
I'll have to get an ionizer / ozone generator as well as something like this 3M machine.
When I smoked, my wife tried several and finally bought a couple of the Sharper Image Ozone Ionizer type. They worked really well and do kill the smoke and replaced it with a clean fresh smell. But they also need maintenance and over time, the ones we had broke, so figure you'll have to replace the unit after a few years.
HEPA filter units can be noisy and are effective for dust and mold, but not so much for smoke and smells.
What happened to your e-cigs?
-Rod
I gave up the e-cigs after realizing how much I was vaping. I was actually getting really into it for awhile, but it was affecting my day to day as I was vaping all day long instead of having a cigarette every couple of hours.
I will check that ionizer out, that seems like the thing to do in this case, in addition to a filter.
I've also been smoking pipes and the various pipe tobacco blends recently too, cigar leaf mixtures and lots of latakia, so the place starts to reak after awhile :)
everyone says it is a hell of a powerful device, I'm looking forward to giving it a shot. lots of good reviews.
make you feel good, it will be a small version of the exhilaration you get when you are near a waterfall. It will not make you, your hair, clothe or breath smell better. It will not erase the risk of heart disease or lung blackening.
You will remain a smelly old man....
Just saying...
I quit 9 years ago with a lot of encouragement from those who know me and when I did I heard the sweetest words from my son..."I'll have longer to love you, dad".
i hear you, I have no kids, no wife, lots of money and no reason to exist other than to pay taxes.Glad you found a reason...
I couldn't give a shit, all is rubbish. Smoking tobacco is one pleasure I have left.
