International negotiations could get finished a lot faster if countries wouldn't have their diplomats staying at five-star hotels and feeding on caviar and champagne at the taxpayer's expense. Between the Beau-Rivage Palace in Lausanne and the the Grand Kempinski (formerly the Noga Hilton) in Geneva (both in Switzerland), the whatever in Vienna and Paris, heck, if I were a diplomat, I'd milk that as long as I could, too!Better to put them up at a little bed-and-breakfast and a $100/day per diem. THEN they'll get things done.
What say you?

they are workers and employees, NOT celebrities or stars (despite the lights, camera, action) and
should be treated as such. All the fine trimmings should be packaged and offered as a bonus
AFTER they complete their responsibilities in a timely and efficient manner.
This may also work as a good filter to get rid of them that meet those goals as they are
obviously NOT government workers!

...Diplomacy is now an inherently aristocratic endeavor. Doesn't the U.S. appoint ambassadors as a political favor, esp to big donors? Big donors can donate big because they're part of the 1% aristocrat class. It would be inappropriate to expect an aristocrat to embrace the lifestyle of a commoner just because of a politically motivated appointment. i.e. w/o requisite perks the appointment could hardly be considered a favor. It's also wise to keep in mind that w/o commensurate compensation, the best potential diplomats will pursue other comparatively more lucrative professions such as CEOs of multinational corporations, banking, securities trading and portfolio management and tier 1 college football coaching. We need more talent in the diplomacy field, not less.
Over here the politicians justify paying nurses very little because that avoids getting people going into nursing for the money and leaves just the truly dedicated.
May be that same reasoning should be applied the politicians and diplomats too.
Equal pay for all, except that I should get more.
Here's a pic of Windsor Castle in London, view during landing at Heathrow. Some people live off the land, some people live off the people who live off the land. Ah, the food chain.
Are you suggesting that Stellar Class hotels on assignment are a way to get better / more talent in the diplomacy field?
I suppose that paying the IRS employees a BONUS even as service suffers is also acceptible?
Too much is never enough
Hmmmm...
"We need more talent in the diplomacy field"
I'm happy to provide it, and stay at a "regular" hotel. Where do I sign up for diplomat duty? Put me in ANY Swiss hotel, and I'm totally THERE, working my butt off in the interest of the country.
:)
I'm a nice guy, I have a solid background in sales, and people enjoy my company. I also appreciate high quality sound reinforcement and reproduction. What more could you want in a diplomat?
:)
... You're too humble to be a diplomat.

...haven't seen this before. Is this your creation? Less concise or efficient than RW's "^" however.
so I dropped "*". Don't want confusion reigning in the Asylum.
