Did you and your buddies cruise the drive ins or the main drags of your towns? If you were not the actual driver, the coveted spot was front seat by the window. This is like my buddy Frank Minafo's 1955 Olds 88. Our cruiser of choice, and a 45 RPM record player under the dash.
We cruised the El Camino from San Jose all the way to Redwood City, there were great drive ins and many chances to meet chicks, but it seems we never did actually meet any!
If we were not playing 45s we had the radio tuned to the Oakland Black stations that played that Doo-Wop and real R&B.
Follow Ups:
I remember when our neighbours had a nipple pink '59 Bel Air - something close to this one.
It was in Port Moresby in PNG and we would all go to the drive-in in it on Saturday nights. Moresby was so hot that you couldn't sit in the car. The drive-in speaker would go on the roof and 4 or 5 kids could lay on the bonnet and 4 or so adults on banana lounges on the gravel in front.
Cheers,
John K
Well I hope you stopped in at Ampex while you were in Redwood City.
:)
.
Sure. The main street was called the gut. So kids would drag the gut on friday and saturday nights. We often chipped in for gas when I was in high school. We would take the car with the biggest trunk to the drive in theaters so at least three kids could hide out there and get in free.
...like this one, but dark blue:
The road was Summer Street in Stamford, CT. We'd cruise the Dairy Queen and a few burger joints while listening to Fleetwood Mac's Rumors.
Miss those days.
My buddy still has his car.

I guess buying a car won't make the days come back, but you could try?
Have fun
...but not in the cards.
Maybe I'll get Matchbox version.

I remember seeing photos of my Dad and Mom in this car. Had the 312cc V-8 T-bird engine, IIRC. Think that they gave it away to their postman.
Saw one on Barrett-Jackson go for $57K. Crazy.
teenage lust and dry humping in the back.
Maybe, better to not go there.
8^)
well, it would ask for the back seat to be steam cleaned!
In the early 1980s, if you were in high school and lived in the suburbs west of Boston and were into cars, that was the place to cruise in your late 1960s / early 1970s hotrod. The Burger King was the place to get food. Not exactly So Cal drive ins or diners a la American Graffiti, but it's what we had and the mood was much the same.
My brother had a 1968 Mustang with a 302 / 4 speed and I had a 1966 Galaxie 500XL convertible with a 352 FE big block that I rebuilt.
Most of our friends had pretty cool cars, including mustangs, Chevelles, Cutlasses, etc. Most were better than beaters but hardly mint. It didn't matter too much what you drove though - it was just fun to drive around and check out the girls and the other cars.
Those days are gone, but the Burger King is still there!

And by Tech HiFi's discount shop on Main Street too!
I was probably hanging out in Waltham in high school when you were working at WC&S while at Brandeis, as I think I'm about 3 or 4 years younger than you are based on prior threads.
It's a lot different now. Probably mostly for the good - lots of decent restaurants and Goodwin's High End on Main Street is nice - but I miss WC&S and Tech HiFi.

It was my first time back since graduating from Bentley in 1981. Moody Street has really changed and looked far better then when I had last seen it.
I used to stop by that Tech Hi-Fi almost daily. It was one of their Bargain Basements and I scored a few truly outstanding deals there ...like a Thorens TD-160 for $49. No box, no manual ...but in excellent shape and for forty-nine-bucks !
Sometimes pieces would come in that they did not carry, perhaps a trade in or something they had gotten for evaluation, or products they ordered and decided not to carry and occasionally the prices would be absurdly low.
I enjoyed my time in Waltham.

From the Totem Drive-In in Ferndale, to Ted's in Pontiac. Up and down, rinse, repeat. The ultimate trolling.
I remember using some rubbing compound on her and waxing the old gal. She shined right up and looked gorgeous. Then, my parents sold her for peanuts to one of the Docs at the hospital and bought a '67 Impala.

It was the first car I ever drove. My dad put glass packs on it which I thought was dumb, but he actually did me a favor - I could hear that car coming from half a mile away.
My brother put them on his 1968 302 Mustang until the town police pulled him over and issued him written warnings more than once.
You're right about hearing them from afar. Those things were ridiculously loud!

of the 45 player? I've heard of them, but never seen one.
