was simply fantastic. I doubt there are many $30 (now $36) bottles of wine out there that good. The overly "grapey" taste of lesser Petite Sirahs was completely missing, it was refined, smooth, while still passing thru the character of the Petite Sirah grape. I've had a lot of good ones (and a few MEH ones as well) in the $20 range, but they were at a totally different level than that one. Here's hoping this bottle will be as good as one of the couples is bringing over an $80 cab!!
With 1.5" thick Certified Angus filets for the main course tomorrow night, we'll eat and drink well.

against the $80 Cab...what years are involved?
Another good (way good) winery that does Petite Syrah right is Ridge Winery whose grapes are at about 2200-2300 feet I would say). They are sold out at the winery but a very good wine shop would likely have some. Last ones I got were about 30-35 if I recall correctly.
I was there recently and walked among the vines on that steep ridge, the PS grapes are smaller than my little finger's fingernail...Eating them off the vine gives a hint of the character of the finished wine.
Ridge also makes my fav (hands down) Zinfandel, their East Bench Zin is laying in my racks now and the 2011 is ready in 2 years. The 2009 is ready now. 27 bucks for the 2011...grab it if you see it.
tin agree on. I'll go pick one up for whatever our friends serve for the Super Bowel get together.
I found a drop dead fantastic Z at, of all places, COSTCO, a few months back. It had a goofy name, really just a bunch of letters thrown together. I threw the bottle away thinking I'd recognize the label next time I went to Costco. Problem is, Costco buys in bulk, when that's gone they may well move onto another deal. I've never found the wine there again. IIRC, it was $17-$20 and was probably the best Z we've ever had. Note, we don't splurge on Zs, $20 is max we've spent. Anyway, if I ever see it again, I'll get it and if it's as good as I remember it was, I'll let you know the winery.

whomever is their wine buyers, they are very astute at finding great wines at low prices. Some of the wines with their name on the label are flat out terrific.
They buy in bulk from name wineries and sell for 15 bucks with their own label what the originating winery sells under their own name for 60 bucks. Not always, but often enough.
Just moved here from from Sac Town. He should be pretty knowledgeable about their wines. I'll ask for his recommendations next time we play and pass any along.
