Snippet: Depending on what the NFL unearths in its investigation of Bill Belichick and the Patriots and all those underinflated footballs, this is what must take place on the part of the league: swift, decisive and dramatic action.
If the league has the Patriots coach dead to rights on this, if it is able to prove beyond shadow of doubt he was the mastermind behind Deflategate, then Belichick must be benched for Super Bowl XLIX.
He should not even be allowed to accompany his team to Arizona on Monday, let alone coach his players during the week or stalk the sideline on Super Bowl Sunday.
NFL commissioner Roger Goodell cannot soft-shoe his way through this.
There are as many scrutinizing eyes on Goodell as there are on Belichick, because Goodell’s 2014 season has been worse than that of the 2-14 Titans and Buccaneers, beginning with his egregious botching of the Ray Rice fiasco.

reelsmith's axiom: Its going to be used equipment when I sell it, so it may as well be used equipment when I buy it.
As a Saints fan I agree with Troy. The whole Saints basically got benched for an entire year for something that if it even existed was a thing with defensive coordinator and a few players. Head coach and entire fan base got punished for an entire lost year. Patriots deserve something more than a slap on the hand for this.
1) Nothing. Not before the SB. Too many variables to investigate; nearly impossible to trace a smoking gun if there is one. Margins of error are too broad everywhere
Also, this crap has been taken way far out of proportion by rabid mouth-breathing "fans". A cooling down period is likely to be applied, even if something definitive is found.
2) Something. The league may choose the dismissal route prior to the SB to defuse this shit bomb so we can enjoy a less tainted game. This will be done by saying yes, under inflation, but no grand heinous plot detected from evidence available. Maybe it was oversight. Or maybe it was undersight by the refs. "We'll make a rule change."
All the above changes if the ballboy gets religion.
Diehard pro football fans are fools. They allow themselves to be taken in by an overhyped crooked "sport".
Wake up fellas, and spend your time on something that doesn't make you appear so gullible and naïve. Just follow the f-in' money if you want the truth, but then again, do you really want the truth?

Oh, are they "your" Cowboys? The NFL sure has you by the short hairs, don't they?
Add to that, where did I say "rigged"? I said crooked, and that's an entirely different thing. I can easily elaborate if you can't see the difference.
Cheers,
Al
I love to know how pro football is crooked. Is pro baseball, soccer, basketball, and hockey similarly crooked as well?

"I love to know pro football is crooked".
You have to be kidding! You claim to be a football fan, but you profess to be unaware of what's been going on in the media in regards to things like the NFL's attempted cover up of the infamous elevator incident, the child beating thug, the collusion between team owners and local governments attempts to get taxpayers to cover the costs of building new stadiums, kickbacks on concession stands etc., just to mention a few things. There's lots more, Google is your friend.
"Is pro baseball, soccer, basketball, and hockey similarly crooked as well?"
C'mon, gimme a break!!!!!!! Why are you questioning me about things that I never even mentioned in my post? Is this some kind of subterfuge/diversion designed to throw readers off the topic or what?
You want pro soccer? I know very little about it, but I'm aware of the match fixing scandals being investigated in Europe, and the bribery committed by a Middle Eastern fixer in order to secure the next World Cup for some oil-rich flea bitten hell-hole. Just get on the net and research articles from the Washington Post, the NY Times, the Huffington Post, the wire, NPR, ABC.net.au, Wikipedia, and insightcrime.org just to name a few.
MLB, the NBA, and other pro sports have their own scandals, mostly driven by owners greed, players drug use & thuggery, and back & forth accusations of racism. But I'm done doing your job for you. Get on the keyboard and research for yourself if you're honestly this naïve.
Cheers,
Al
crooks. I'd say the cited actions fall a bit short of crookery.
IMHO, there's nothing crooked with local municipalities offering incentives to major sports franchises to locate in their jurisdictions. In 2009, the city of Arlington, Tx. footed $350mm of the $1.2b it took to build the Cowboys new stajum. Increased sales taxes/car rental taxes/hotel occupancy taxes fund their contribution. Sounds like a big # but it's spread over decades. BFD.
Far from crooked says I. BTW, those numbers came from the miracle of the Google.
Cheers, David

David,
The fact that the NFL did, in fact, attempt to cover up those actions actually does go to prove that they're crooked.I'll pass on your comments about the new Cowboys stadium and take your word for it that there was no bribery and intimidation going on there at all.
No sense in attempting to debate a zealot, and no insult intended. :-)
Cheers,
Al

As far as Jerry World (Cowboy's stajum nickname), Arlington's bid was well ahead of Irving's (where the Cowboys used to play), and Dallas'. Our leaders in Dallas, such as they are, didn't sufficiently step up to the plate, which was a huge mistake. There was a perfect site north of downtown just north of where the Mavericks basketball arena was built. Obviously you feel different and you ain't exactly the lone ranger in that regard. I respect that.

I haven't seen "Selma" yet (It'll be on Netflix soon enough), though I'm not sure what that has to do with deflate gate, NFL, or professional golf.
Do I believe that by and large PGA TOUR players are better citizens than their NFL counterparts? You betcha I do! Just take a look at the arrest records of each organization.
Let me give a golf example. If Rory McElroy were caught using a golf ball that did not meet USGA or R & A specs in a tournament he competed in much less won, then he would be immediately disqualified and forced to forfeit the victory.
Case closed.
10 or so years back Ian Woosnam found 15 clubs in his bag while playing in a major. Upon learning this he turned himself in to a rules official and was subsequently by rule disqualified - He fired his drunken idiot caddy later that day.

Certainly there are good citizens in the NBA (whom I didn't mention), as well as the NFL. Compare the arrest records of the PGA Tour against virtually any other sport.
Have you ever heard of a PGA Tour member kicking the ever loving shit out of his child, wife, or girl friend?
How about a PGA member involved in a fight or shooting outside of a nightclub at 2 am?

inner city slums? Do you not know the percentage of kids that play football come from those kinds of places? That football (and basketball) are considered tickets out-of-poverty and hardship because they are based purely on performance (sure, a kid of color can get good grades, go to a good school, and then be passed over for a job because so-and-so's kid plays golf w/the owner's kid).
Next up, you'll be marveling that SAT scores are higher in white suburbs than in those populated by folks of color.
You did say "better citizens," too. If that isn't demeaning and racist, what is?
Tin;
You state that football, basketball,(and presumably baseball) are based "purely on performance", and pro golf is not?
I would suggest that professional golf is based more on performance than ANY of those other sports. Why? Simple, there are NO contracts in professional golf! If you don't perform - you don't eat. If your in a slump you don't get paid. If you have a off year or are injured, your off of the tour.
We constantly see players in those other sports who are over paid, and not living up to their contract (Albert Puhols, Jay Cutler come immediately to mind). This is not so on the PGA or European Tour.
Let's visit the issue of "better citizens";
Why in your mind is it demeaning or racist when I point out the arrest records of some of these characters from the NFL? In your mind, is good citizenship and good behavior something that is only for the affluent pale faces of society? If anything you inference that if someone is from the inner city or slums they should be held to a lower standard of behavior, or simply be given a pass for acting like a thug.
In my mind it's racist to give a race or socioeconomic group a "pass" for such behavior. There are plenty of great citizens that have come from less than desirable upbringings, just like there are scum bags that grew up with privilege.
Let's start holding all people to the same standard of citizenship and stop giving a pass to bad and criminal behavior.
I have included a few photos of good citizens of color from the PGA Tour.
These are not fringe players, but in fact, most are winners of major championships.

Exactly - If your golf game is in a slump you do not get paid as a professional golfer.
Sorry for the confusion.

Wow, you have been bought - hook, line and sinker.
What is this politically correct crap going on today?Everything has to have a racial connotation put on it or a sexual preference one. Get over it. The whole world walks on egg shells because we are worried about offending some group and 90% those groups insult themselves..Go listen to one of Chris Rock's videos and tell me what you hear? Now while there are a lot of African Americans in the NFL,there are also plenty of caucasian NFL players and athletes that have gotten trouble as well..When you get knocked in the head as many times as those guys have, you would act like a dip shit to no doubt. It doesn't matter where you come from..

that would be admitting that that refs are incompetent (because they should have noticed) and the NFL will never do that. If he should be suspended, then so should NFL refs. Never happen...There are politics involved here. And the public would demand that something more be done about it. I admit it is a can of worms...
would end up taking the fall for this. Whether they are at fault or not. For the good of the game of course.
It does seem like they should have noticed. If they didn't notice a 2psi difference then I don't believe it would make a difference in the game.
That's not to say rules should be broken.
...owner of the Patriots Robert Kraft was a big supporter of Goodell during the Ray Rice brouhaha so Goodell owes him.
I'm sure a low level employee will be put forth as the fall guy. Something like "the ball boy innocently tried to help out his team".
I agree with Madden, this had to originate with Brady.
...Tom Brady has a press conference at 4pm EST today.
What if Belichick didn't know?
It would not have affected the outcome of the game.
The investigation will most likely not be complete until after the Super Bowl.
How often does something like this go on unnoticed during the regular season?
There are much more important things going on in the world today...
True, it wouldn't have made a difference in this game, but every game is different. Are you saying that it OK to break rules intended to keep the playing field even for all teams? Shame on you. That is what is wrong with America. People who think they are above the law..
...2 down.
So that's what's wrong with America.
Thanks for clearing it up.
It's football - a game.
There are millions of dollars involved. Probably billions. So a "game" doesn't need rules? I think it is good for all teams to at least have an even playing field. If you don't. Well no one would even care about the NFL. The NFL is between a rock and a hard spot though. If they reprimand someone (and they should) it makes them look bad because those "officiating" the game should have noticed.
...all about the money.
Nothing else matters in pro sports.
it would no doubt be the end of life as we know it. Get a grip and focus your hand wringing over the real problems in the world.
...but Brady and Belichick will forever have tarnished images.
I'd rather try my best and not win, than cheat, win and forever have people think less of me.
But, that's just me.

Nicely done, Dean!
Seriously though, you really should cut Kava a little slack here. The Pats are *his* team, and to see this happen when they've managed to get to the SB has to be frustrating, especially when there's little if any probablility that the inflation level had any significant impact on the outcome of the game. Boyle's Law is uncompromising, and depending on the room temp where those game balls were checked for proper inflation, it's entirely possible that they would have all been underinflated at field temperature.
Having said that, deliberate cheating demands immediate disqualification if the league is to retain any credibility whatsoever. IMO, of course. As always, YMMV.
Yep, temp goes down, so does pressure. Plus the accuracy of pressure gauges is really bad, it varies with each gauge usually, unless you use really high quality, regularly calibrated gauges, and hold it at the perfect angle to the needle.
It may not even be a big issue with the league normally, they may, and probably do, just pop it on for a second, get a reading and don't worry about it. I doubt if it's given very much attention under normal circumstances. Just another regular step in their game day prep. I wouldn't bet they spend much time at it.
...I agree.
I wanted to root for the Patriots to beat the arrogant Seahawks, but now I don't care who wins.

Not for the big show. Maybe Goodell will come down from his executive tower and check the balls before the Superbowl?
