If you'll Pardon the Expression?
Don't both teams use the same balls?
That would neutralize the 'advantage'.
If EACH team has its OWN balls, than THAT is a problem. I'd go to 'game balls', like in baseball where when a new orb is needed, the Ump (or ref) simply reaches into the hopper and snags a new one.
Too much is never enough

All this talk of “soft balls” is an apt allegory for where we are as a nation. ~:)
...no doubt we need to get much tougher!
The problem with the nation is the inability of both sides to compromise for the good of the entire nation.
And they can't compromise because they are all owned by the special interests.
