I have a stock certificate bought by an ancester in 1875.he bought 100 shares in the Geddes & Bertrand Mill and mining company. (in Nevada)
What I'm wondering is, is it worth anything, (besides sentimental value.)
From what little I understand, he might have never cashed it in, the company may still be be around, (or might have been absorbed by another company.
Any help would ber appreciated.

Ok,a followup.
I have tried to research this issue before and got nowhere.
However, with everyones encouragement, I did another search, and came up with this:
I hope it works out, if it is worthless, it is being kept, not sold. It has been in my family since 1875. Thank you.

...replace that heritage.

Actually, I don't believe I would "sell" it. I would just prove ownership. I would still keep it then as a keepsake.

It may be worth around ~$200 - $300 on eBay with a bit of luck.
There seems to be a market for these mining stock certificates.
the company and they are not around now. There were a couple of listings of mines they once owned but no longer own. I would think a stock broker or the Nevada government is the way to proceed to see if that cert has any value.

The certificate should be legal tender - assuming that the company or its successor did not buy back its share and become private-
You will need to do some research for the original company - I'd start by seeing how far back the online records in NV go back - otherwise you are headed to Carson City for a few days of research - the corporation would have filed with the state.
From there you should be able to see if the company was acquired - or merely closed...
Sounds like a bit of fun research - but don't hold out that Berkshire Hathaway purchased it - and it entitles you to 10 of their shares....
