I'm not happy with that as a Nats fan. While it may affect trades still to be made before the season starts the Nats already had about the best starting pitching in the NL if not the majors.
They need offensive help more than anything. Why spend 210 million for a guy that plays every 5 days? That money could have easily gotten TWO all star caliber offensive starters that play every day. They also traded their best reliever Tyler Clippard for Yuniel Escobar! What? Yes they did that. Clippard who has the best numbers of ANY reliever over the last 5 years.
Also some of Scherzers numbers have declined. Sure, not a lot but when you spend $210 million you shouldn't get any declines. His WHIP went from a league best .970 in 2013 to 1.175 in 2014. Also he pitched 6 more innings in 2014 than 2013 but allowed 44 more hits (reflected in his higher WHIP)
So his numbers are still top shelf but even w/o the small declines I'd pass on him because the Nats have other more pressing needs. Other needs that have made themselves abundantly clear in their post season appearances in 2012 and 2014. OFFENSE!

He (Scherzer) has one complete game in his entire career. What would Blyleven, Koufax, Gibson, Ryan, Palmer, Carlton, or Seaver be worth today?
Sheesh!

I hear ya! Catfish Hunter pitched 30 complete games in 75. I'm guessing that's more than both leagues or close to it last year.

First and foremost, there is no point in us burning up too many brain cells analyzing this until we see what other moves Rizzo has up his sleeve, if any. Just for the sake of argument, let's assume that the lineup they have today is the one on opening day (and I seriously doubt that). I look at it like a bit of a two-fer. The chances of re-signing Zimmermann don't look all that good. Scherzer is getting a lot of money, but the contract is heavily back-loaded, which is unusual in cases like this (he'll only get about half the money over the course of the contract). This makes it affordable to keep Zimmermann this year and go for it with a pretty amazing rotation. It's going to take the same money to sign Zimmermann, and there is no guarantee that he would stay, even for that amount. If they wait until next year, and cannot sign Zim, there is no guarantee that a replacement for him will be there to be had. Flexibility is the key, and now they have it in spades. As I said, there are so many ways that this could play out, it is mind-boggling. Sure, nothing's guaranteed, but I don't see much downside here. and I can't wait for the season to start.I'm with you about the offense, and I'm sure something is coming. The whole Desmond/Escobar thing is a head scratcher to me. I don't see Desmond being traded unless someone comes in with a stupid offer that they can't turn down, and I think that they have a somewhat better chance of re-signing him than Zimmermann. The only thing to replace him with right now that would make sense would be a left-handed hitting second baseman with power, but I don't know of any young Joe Morgans sitting out there on the market right now. The most likely scenario is that if Desmond goes, they have a shortstop to bridge the gap until a couple of prospects are ready for the bigs.
Of course, I am a reliable expert source for this kind of analysis, due to all of the in-depth info I got during the 30 second meeting that my son and I had with Mike Rizzo at NatsFest a few weeks ago!

Well lets hope good comes of it BUT remember a baseball contract is all guaranteed money front or backloaded. To me backloading it just makes him totally untradable should he not be putting up "typical" Scherzer numbers later in the 7 years of the deal.
I've been hearing this is more a Lerner deal than a Rizzo deal too. Rizzo is tight. They should have signed better bats last year before or after the trade deadline and did not. I was never in love w/ the Cabrerra deal. To me that was a cheap way out and very Rizzo-like. You know Cleveland paid his salary the whole time he was a Nat?
I do think they could have resigned Jordan and for a lot less. I'm assuming there will be more deals before spring training. Desmond to the Mets for Murphy and someone else keeps popping up on rumor boards. This way Escobar goes to SS where he played his whole career and Murphy to second. Then we get a lot weaker up the middle defensively.
Nice pic! I was too cheap to give the Nat's $20 X 2 for the wife and I. That and the four hour round trip driving. I watch Nat's talk every week and am a big Phil Wood fan. I've known him 30+ years.
