for sharing what must have been a difficult tale to tell....As an aside, around the corner from the Twin Peaks bar was a flower shop in the 1940,50s. My mom's mom lived on the 3rd floor above that shop, maybe 30 feet from the corner.
I spend a lot of time there, feeding wood to the stove, being fawned over by my 6 aunts, listening to my uncle Pete play his Martin and sing Hank songs.
Watching my Grandma smoke Prince Albert...
Thanks for sharing your tale....That neighborhood is embedded in my soul.
funny, touching and very well written.
In some ways it's too bad you hadn't hit the Castro 10 years earlier.
It was a different life and time, much less constrained, much more free and vibrant, much less segregated. It's much like an outdoor mall these days.
But then that can be said of many SF neighborhoods that didn't suffer the horror and devastation of the epidemic.
Also though, the Castro was never the same after The Elephant Walk caught fire.

I've never had so much fun writing a story.I'm just sorry I wasn't able to traumatize John EH with it. : )
