Porsches? The mark of the nouveau riche, old money doesn't flaunt it like that. I also remember Dino Martin parking his Dino Ferrari all over campus when I was there.
Or maybe they negotiated better pay than you did. ;)

...they were all used Porsches.
I bought a new 260Z.
I remember the 280Z and dated a gal that had a 240Z. How long did they make the 260Z?
-Rod
Sold in US, 1974, only. Saw a couple of GT-R's on my way up to Monterey. They are BIG cars. Lots of ponies.

I had a '85 300Z for a long time, but those got to be more touring cars than sports cars, unless you got the turbo. It finally got totaled after handing it down to my daughter and from her to the younger daughter when an idiot hit her and destroyed the passenger's side wheel. Not a serious crash, but more than enough to total it. It still ran like a champ with well over 200,000 on it.That's one reason that both girls can drive a stick, a rare talent these days.
Do you remember the earlier Datson 2000? A friend of mine had a Jaguar XKE coupe that we took to the Cal game one year. On the way back, a guy in a 2000 kept acting like he wanted to race us and he'd zoom by at 90 or 95 on I5. We'd let him get way ahead and then past him at 145 mph. Take it back down to 75 or so and let him catch up. I think he topped out around 105, so it wasn't much of a contest, but a nice distraction on a 5 hour, record run home.

Yeah! A friend restored one in the early 1990's. Cute little, British-style roadster.
My current new (old) ride is a 2007 Honda S2000. Great little car. Its max speed is prolly no more than 140MPH, with top down. Hard to beat it, on tight, windy roads, like Highway 1 --- around Monterey.
8^)
But we already had a convertible and too many cars. I don't remember if they were out when we bought the BMW 328 in '97.
We compromised on a 4 seater, so we could take the boys with us. The 328 does love curves and is surprisingly unwindy with the top down. The fastest I've taken it is around 120 and it just sucks down into the pavement and feels like 80. I guessed that it might do 145 or so before I hit redline on the tach.
The wife uses as the daily driver now and it still only has 95,000 on it. She loves red convertibles, but has lost interest in a stick.
She wants an automatic with a hatchback as soon as the truck is paid off.

Hatchback and pretty nice performance.
I really like the S2000. Nice top end power. Love the 8K redline shifts. Pretty reliable. My 2007 has 40K miles on it. Doesn't burn oil. Seems rock solid --- knock on wood.

OR the Civic SI?
Look at the CD or other car mag 'hot hatchback' tests. IF that is the way you want to go.
Without such high performance, the NEW Miata may be a decent replacement for the S2000?
I LOVE the styling, from the few photos I've seen. They are supposed to bring it to the US with the 2.0 'skyactive' powerplant.

OK... some CGI. Toggle the "R" button for each video side.8^)

Wife is in mood for new car. Maybe a '15, but she might wait, too. Her Camry has 100k and needs a LITTLE work. Nothing drastic. It had a water pump at about 45k which really set me off.
Anyway, the Civic R is MANUAL only which lets it out of contention. The wife is, with my help, targeting in on something like the Mazda6 which SHOULD be available with a Diesel by the time we go to buy.
I like the VW but they are BORING. No Beatle need apply.
The Audi A3? I think that's more than we can afford. But I do like it. The sportwagon or whatever they call it is NICE.
Chevy Cruz has a Diesel model, but the engine is not as refined as the others.
Honda has yet to be heard from at least in the US market while the Dodge / Jeep has access to a very nice 3.0 Diesel with IMMENSE torque. But I don't want a Jeep or Dodge truck. Cadillac was at one point negotiating for the same engine.
I think a DIESEL FIT would be killer. A CVT or Dual clutch auto of maybe 100hp and 150+ft/lb of twist. That'd get to you 50mpg road mileage and put many hybrids right out to lunch.
Wife likes the FIAT500, too, but I'm working to talk her OUT of that move. Very LOW power, while the 500L has the turbo motor and a dual clutch auto. I need to do more research of the FIAT offerings. I may RENT one for a couple days, just to check out the basic auto.
And finally? The MINI has a 1.5l engine which is a 3 cylinder. I don't know. Power and torque are there ON PAPER, but still? The 2.0 is the 'big' engine, using the same pistons and tooling as the 3 banger. The OPTION list is Off-Putting with literally optional ANYTHING from seats to wacky chrome / paint schemes.
Stay Tuned:
Too much is never enough
Lexus IS250? Can get low-mileage used ones, ok priced.
I see. I don't know if wife wants LEATHER interior.
The way they are ordered is always with plenty of 'sizzle'.
I could buy a NEW stripper (2015) for mid-30s, and may have some haggle room.
Wife ALSO has to pass on 'the look' which means not BORING to look at.
I like it and seem 'em around once in a while.
Too much is never enough
She really likes it. Her previous car was an Acura RSX. We got it used from CarMax. Similar to one in link. But, hers has 12K miles.
