My quick google also showed that leaking hydrogen tanks are safer than leaking gasoline tanks.
Basically that is because H2 is lighter than air while gasoline and its fumes are not.
They fitted two otherwise identical cars with leaking tanks and then ignited it.
The H2 produced a vertical flame which left the car nearly undamaged while the gas turned into an inferno which completely destroyed the car and would have done the same to cars near by.

Guy I went to school with is crashing cars for a living.
He owns a company that does a lot of the Euro NCAP crash tests.
Just as well because I remember him crashing a few cars well before he was paid to do so.
