I confess the internet always has been nothing more than an entertaining time waster for me. Maybe yes it can answer a question.. But most if the questions are also time wasters i thought up while surfing the net.

But we don't cook em in the 'wave. Unwrapped, in the oven, at 425. Might do some tonight now that I'm thinking about it.

...oven is best but takes too long and heats up the house in the summer.
I microwave them, then put them on the grill along with the steaks to crisp up their skins.
Yeah, grilling them sounds like a good idea. I'll have to try that.
As long as we're all focussed on baking potatoes...
We jump-start them in the microwave, and then finish them in the toaster oven, similar to what Road Warrior does.
But I wonder if they'd retain more water, and thus be moister (more moist?) if we'd just do them entirely in the microwave. It seems that oven-baking in dry heat for an extended period, especially if not foil-wrapped, might be drying them out more than microwaving them. Maybe I can get a government grant to study that question. Yeah, that's a good idea.
:)
in foil "steams" them. Microwaving them is suitable for emergencies, i.e., the man is doing steak and baked potatoes, forgets to bake the taters, the steaks are almost done, so he slips em in the Microwave leaving the Mrs. none the wiser whilst she's discussing her latest harrowing adventure at Bed Bath and Beyond with her peers.

Should I pre-heat the microwave? Most folks say no. Your thoughts?
:)
No.I spend a lot of time on the Internet while I'm doing other things. For example, I'm typically here on the AA in the morning while I watch the stock market on another computer, practice on my horn, etc. If there's not much to read or reply to, I check out tapeheads.net or gearslutz.com. Occasionally, I go over to diyaudio.com, but a lot of their discussions are beyond my knowledge level, so I often don't know what's right or wrong - all I know is that there's disagreement about circuit topology and opamps. ;)
Then, when I'm tired of multi-tasking, I take a nap. Rinse, repeat. Obviously, I'm simplifying, but you get the idea.
As someone else wrote, it's also a business tool (I do some of the marketing for our symphonic band), a method for communication (email), and to see what's up around the world and with my far-flung friends. I regularly go on to music websites (in the past two years, I've been to five concerts that I wouldn't have known about, were it not for the Internet and email). I also learn a lot by reading posts from people who know stuff that I didn't know. Etc.
Btw, at the moment, West Texas Intermediate for January delivery is at $75.28 a barrel, and Sony is down 36 cents to $20.45. The S&P 500 is basically flat, down .33 (up from an hour ago). Doc Severinsen will be playing in Minneapolis next month with the Minnesota Orchestra (if he can get into the airport!), and three copies of Roger Ingram's new CD are on their way to me.
The Internet is a wonderful thing!
:)
Edit: If I were watching The View or Jerry Springer or Divorce Court, THAT would be a time-waster!!!

something else more "productive," as if life were one long continuous business transaction?
It either amuses or it does not.
I use it as an info tool, a business tool (two websites) and a reference for many things. When I'm here on AA it has a social aspect but I learn much as well. For electronics I get tons of info from schematics to tutoring from those that know more than me. Email is also a tool. My wife plays games on the Internet which I feel is a time waster but if she wants to that's fine.

This 'place' has been of great value to me, but you haven't risen to that, yet.

& you are wasting your time right now!
But, I have to admit, we are much more well-informed that we use to be. At least, some of us are.
I would think after the combination of minds that we can have here, that we would all be MORE enlightened and of common mind. WRONG, WRONG, WRONG ;-)
Back to just wasting time. Oh, I WAS wasting time!
between being entertained and wasting time. I'm not sure I could tell you where that line is. Are you wasting time when you go out to see a movie?
.
Yes. Most of the time I spend on the internet is time wasted.
