With another storm coming yet.
Pics from the LA Times.
Follow Ups:
My ma grew up outside of Buffalo in the 20's and 30's and told stories of massive snowstorms.
Lake Erie is NOT to be triffled with when it comes time for a major blast of cold from the north.
I lived in Chicago when we got 3 feet virtually overnite, but NOTHING like the pictures I see here!
And I hear Lake Superior is freezing up about a MONTH early.
Too much is never enough
I spent nearly forty years living there, dealing with that crap, and I don't miss it a bit. I went through the blizzard of 1977, and another one in 1985.
Couple the weather to a huge collapse of blue-collar jobs (for reasons of Central political neutrality I won't give my opinion on the "why" of that), and I've never been homesick. Twenty years of sporadic employment coupled with the harsh winters was more than enough for me.
It's nice in the summer though, and Niagara Falls is worth seeing.
I agree exactly!!!
Grew up there and Left after 32 years in 1981.
Survived the blizzard of 77.
I have family there but do not go back often.
Thank god every day I live in the south. We would never move back up North.
Great people, wonderful variety of ethnic foods, and even the "Always a bridesmaid, but never a bride" sports teams.
But almost twenty years of plant closings (I never held a job for more than eighteen months from age 20 to nearly 40) gave me nothing to build a foundation upon.
I wish them well, but I'm with you. I love the South, and for a lot more reasons than the weather!
I wouldn't want to go for a layup in that last pic, that would hurt... yeowch!!

A. Maybe climate problems we need to deal with
B. Didn't happen; liberal media made it up
C. God's will/punishment
D. I don't believe the snow measuring scientists ( well, I don't believe in science in general..)
E. Bad luck.
That is the only RESPONSIBLE thing to do.
Would love to have some of their snow here, at least, in the mountains -- cause I wouldn't want to have to shovel my way out of my house.
The record precipitation there and LACK of it here is getting unnerving, especially the lack of precipitation in Colorado AND California, where it is very much needed and we depend upon it.
I understand that. It's the '…bigger than usual' and the increasing number of 'bad luck' storms that are the problem. The Buffalonians know snow but most don't remember one like this.
Climate Change (NOTE: I didn't say 'global warming') implies greater than normal swings in weather from hot to cold. And back.
Wooly Mamoths are found with UNdigested grass in their stomachs. This implies a Very rapid change in weather from at least OK to WAY too cold.
Some information on 'The Little Ice Age' which should be of some small comfort.
Too much is never enough
Lake effect snow is caused by the warm water of the lake in the path of the storm. The lake gives up additional moisture to the storm and thus contributes 'extra' snow to the snowfall. The eastern shore of the State of Michigan gets a lot of lake effect snow. And Buffalo is famous for the lake effect snow it gets.
So though this storm was bigger than usual.. It is very typical for Buffalo.
And Buffalo has the snow removal equipment to deal with it.
If it was snow like that in Washington DC.. There you got a crazy happening.
A thorough white-out is the reason: you couldn't see past the end of a car hood.
"They're freezin' up in Buffalo, stuck in their cars
While I'm lyin' here, 'neath the sun and the stars..."
all the best,
mrh
