An article attached about a street photo collection depicting how "smart" devices are building walls between us. Very interesting.
I think the walls were being erected as populations expanded; noticing how folks walked down crowded streets without any eye contact. The phones and other gizmos just provided another way to divert, and accelerate the trend.

I know a lot of people addicted to these devices, I use the devices almost like when someone would read a newspaper, everyone else I know is on it 24/7 and especially annoying when I am trying to make a point, I then all of a sudden a blank stare, a check of the smart phone by the conversation recipient, a look down to their phone, then a blank stare at me and a "whaat"?
seriously? I see this with people of all ages, even business people in their 70s. it is sad.
I don't know. I still talk to strangers when I get out. I still wear a wrist watch, watch people when I'm out because everyone else is preoccupied with their phones. Still look at the stars, daydream, write in a journal (with an actual pen! I know!!). But yes there has been concern that mobile connection is alienating people further than ever. Things aren't as tangible as they once were and as we move further into the future I fear the decline of conversation, understanding subtle gestures or facial expressions, tone, etc. Hell folks think I'm strange when I say "When I listen to music I get up and dance and sing into the remote, kitchen utensils and dance with the vacuum cleaner." As if this type of behavior was strange....Well I think staring at a small screen is strange. I'd rather be known for actually being human than a robot. Maybe I put it to harshly but this is a topic I've brought up with family and friends numerous times.

the wife and I celebrated at a very nice restaurant. I noticed that the dad at one table was constantly focused on his phone while mom and junior were playing with an iPad.
Huh?
Are the lovely young couples you often see in restaurants - girls so beautiful that back in the day you'd have cut off your left #$%@# to spend 5 minutes with them ..... And they are both completely ignoring one another and posting crap on their phones.
It borders on criminal!

I see people on holidays with wonderful beaches, forests, birds, but so busy taking selfies to enjoy them.
I see people at the movies not watching the movie - posting that they are at the movies on facebook.
I see people at gigs not watching or listening to the band - posting that they are at the gig and how awesome it is.
I see people in cars .............
Cheers,

I often show it to people.

The decline of community is something else and began long before ubiquitous computing.
It is possible to sustain community but it takes work and it will not be the same. Our Beilby Place is a community, we work on it.
