We had an unusually nice day for mid-October today in Minnesota, so in honor of summer's last dying gasp, I made margaritas. This recipe is mine and has been refined over time via experimentation. I've never found one that I like better, so I'm sharing it with you folks:
1/2 cup of tequila. Cuervo Gold works okay. If you really want to go high end, the "rested" Patron is fabulous, but pricey.
1/4 cup of Grand Marnier. Probably more important than the tequila. Don't use triple sec - the drink will disown you.
2 tablespoons of light agave nectar
1/2 cup fresh-squeezed lime juice
2-1/2 cups of crushed ice
Invert margarita glasses and rub rims with lime, then frost edges with sea salt. Blend drink ingredients thoroughly, and serve in prepared glasses. Makes about 4 drinks depending on the size of the glass.
As I said, I've never found a recipe that I like better. If someone knows of one, I'd love to hear about it. Enjoy.
Follow Ups:
There is a place called Guapos that has frozen ones from a machine and their specialty is a frozen swirl if half strawberry and half regular. It is way better than it should be.
I generally like anything with tequila.

we swapped out Grand Marnier for Cointreau years ago. Mucho improvo. Not so sticky-sweet as GM. We also use silver tequila, vs anejo, altho we also like Cazadores reposodo. As good a swap as the Cointreau actually. Silver seems to make for a 'fresher' taste, which you want with the citrus, I think. The other thing we do is shake well with ice then pour them straight up, almost frothy. I've never found one I like better than we can make at home.
of Mateos mrgrta mixer (maybe 1 oz in an 8 oz mini pitcher). EDIT_ I did NOT use a blender. I used a shaker. No drink em frozen at home.BTW, I think I'm agreeing with you when I say a nice Anejo in a mrgrta is overkill. I've used $100 "gift" tequilas in mrgrtas and found them no more satisfying than a $25-$30 budget reposado tequila in a mgrgrta. Kinda like trying to enjoy a 2009 Grgich Hills Cabernet with a splash of 7-up in it.

As I had hoped, this thread has given me many things to try, and I intend to take advantage. :-)
The home recipe is: a little more than a shot of decent silver tequila like patron or cabo wabo, less than a shot of Cointreau, and about a shot of fresh squeezed lime juice. Shake hard with ice and pour straight up in small glasses. Plan little else after two.
Licor 43, has a hint of vanilla in it. Don't laugh. It smooths out rough edges and adds a blast of Orange. About $25/5th. We use 1/2 of it, and 1/2 of another Orange Liqueur
DeKuypers O3 (NOT the regular Dekuypers Triple Sec swill). This is a decent substitute for Cointreau (the best IMHO), about $22/5th
Patron Citronage. Patron's premium Orange Liqueur. IMHO, over rated, but still decent at $23/5th
Grand Gala, as the name suggests, similar to Grand Marnier, but $5-$10/5th cheaper
Hard to find outside of Texas is Paula's Texas Premium Orange Liqueur.
Very very good, $23/5th.
And a cheap sleeper, Hiram Walker Triple Sec. Yes, I know it's a Triple Sec but it has higher alchohol content than others Triple Secs and well made. We generally use 1/4oz of it and 1/4th oz of a premium Orange Liqueur for every oz of Tequila unless we're making special premium mrgrtas.

I look forward to trying out the suggestions, esp. the Legodas. I think I do have some Cointreau so I'll give it a try as well.
Thanks!
.
Try Cointreau instead of Grand Marnier. It makes a world of difference.
This is my favorite:
1 1/2 oz of your favorite top shelf tequila
1/2 oz of Cointreau
1 oz fresh lime juice
That's a margarita!
I'll let you know but yours LOOKS much better. BTW, we use Legodas Reposado 100% agave tequila for our non special mrgrta tequila. Only $25/1.75ltr and beats the pants off Jose whatshisname and is cheaper. Jose gets it's color from coloring, Legodas (and many other bargain Reposados) get theirs from aging in oak. Above is last weekend's batch. No Agave Nektar, I sweetened them with an amount of Mateos Mrgrta mixer = to the amount of tequila.
