From the trailhead at Harts Pass, 20 miles up a road from Mazama WA, last week.
The "road" is partly a reclaimed railroad bed. I busted an oil pan on way down. Story for another time.
Camera is the little Sony RX100, on trial to see if I can live without the extra 5-7 lbs of big rig gear. Mixed results, but overall a swell little camera.
Top down:
- Scree slope; ooking northwest to Mt Baker in distance.
- Cloudwalk along ridge trail.
- Talus field.
- Beaver ponds downslope from trail. Lodge in rear pond; dams in other two.
- Concoidal scree and talus from folded sedimentary rock beds. Trail below; south to left.
- Talus field.
- Scree and talus below summit ridge.
- Trail (south to left) through a larch stand. Larch are conifers, but not evergreens. They shed their needles seasonally. A common northern hemisphere species.
Follow Ups:
pursuit of fit residents hereabouts is to go the distance. I'm not that masochistic, but I do hike pieces of it. That looks like a singularly forbidding, unforgiving stretch.
It would appear you're headed S?
Let me know if indeed you come this way, into the spectacular Willamette Valley.
One request; don't take any pictures for posting!
We're already Californicated.
It was a day hike; 6 miles in, 6 out. I've gone both north and south from Harts Pass. South gets up along ridge lines sooner with spectacular overviews. 35 miles north is Canada.
I talked to some through-hikers who were headed there from the south terminus. Almost finished, they looked it. I've wanted to try that for a long time now, but never had the time, money, and gonads all at the same time.
theme song?
I may be missing one or two...
