It's a game the U.S. and Russia play all the time and have for decades. Keeps both sides from getting bored up there where it's cold!
Other things going on inside and around Russia are what trouble me.

It seems pretty obvious to me that "ridding the world of Saddam and his weapons of mass destruction" was little more than an opportunity to ignite the fires of seemingly endless civil wars in Iraq and nearby regions. They had an idea about what might happen if Iraq was "liberated" and Saddam was overthrown, and their predictions have come true. This plan to throw the Islamic world into an endless cycle of chaos and self-destruction has been wildly successful so far.The next step in this rather simple plan is now unfolding. The western allies must move forward together in order to protect themselves from the rising hordes of terrorists and, more precisely, to destroy or subdue Islam and anyone or anything else deemed "incompatible with the 21st century". More control over oil production, the mining of precious minerals, etc.., is also deemed important.
Of course, Putin is worried.

Barry who? Barry the hatchet?
Doesn't look like that "control the oil" thing is working out too well and to be honest, I'm not even sure what you mean by control the oil.
From countries who've had or are having serious disruptions of the former political power structure, we import 0 bbls from Egypt, 0 from Tunisia, 0 from Syria and 0 from Libya (Libya formerly around .1mmbpd) and imports from Iraq are down from pre invasion totals of about 1mmbpd to about .5mmbpd. (note, we never really imported squat from Tunisia, Syria, and Egypt, just have em on the list as they've got new political paradigms or will soon)

If we can't defeat or control our Islamist enemies in the region "we" ( the US and it's western allies) might lose access to goods produced by our Islamist "friends" in the region. It's not just oil we're concerned about. For instance, it has been known for some time that Afghanistan contains a spectacular wealth of minerals, but mining and transporting them from the region will continue to be a logistical nightmare as long as our *enemies* in the region remain undefeated.Speaking of enemies...
Because of it's confrontational nature, it might be said that Islam itself is the enemy of anything non-Islamic. Moderate Islamists (and modern, "commercialized" Christians and Jews) don't like to admit this, but absolute intolerance is a part of both Mohammed's and Moses' teaching. The difference between us and them comes from the fact that we generally don't follow Moses' creed of intolerance very strictly, as in centuries past. Many, many more Muslims do follow Mohammed's teachings strictly today, however.
The violent nature of Judaism has been transformed or subdued for the most part and now, in the 21st cenury, there is simply no room for things like *unadulterated* Islam (or Judaism). Ironically, our modern secular creed, the creed of corporatism, also allows for intolerance - but only for *the intolerant*. Intolerant Muslims, and all those who would defy the new corporate creed, must be subdued or eliminated!

Our enemies, once they gain control of Afghanistan, and make no mistake about it, they will gain control, will either mine and market the minerals, meaning the supply will increase, thus driving down prices of existing rare minerals, or they won't mine it and the status quo, vis a vis these rare minerals, will remain unchanged. N'est-ce pas?

OR they could only mine so much, to drive up world prices for these vital commodities.
China, which has large deposits of the 'Rare Earth' elements follows this strategy.
The article I link'd is 3 years old. I'm sure some things have changed since its publication:
Too much is never enough
thereby, if demand stays constant, driving down prices either a little or a lot (depending on price elasticity relating to supply changes, of which, in the case of rare minerals, I have zero, or possibly less, knowledge of).
I've written worse sentences, just not tonite. Hopefully my point, such as it was, wasn't obscured by my Sudzian writing.

Even if demand increased ONLY 2% annually, that would result in a doubling of annual demand in only 36 years.
All mineral resources are finite in one sense or another.
Population is the same way. This is exponential growth at its finest.
Now, people have 'expectations'. When I was in Italy, even fairly conservative and non-wealthy towns sported about 8 cell phones per 10 persons. Or so it seemed.
Our beloved stereos and ALL our other hi-tech goodies are very resource intensive. You simply would not believe what it takes to manufacture semiconductors, for example.
You wouldn't believe what is going on in CHILE, for the sake of Lithium Batteries.
'The Limits to Growth' are approaching rapidly. And, as it turns out, it simply doesn't matter if the 'wall' is climate, resources, food. population, potable water, or alien invasion. (UFOs, not the guys from over 'there').
Too much is never enough
Too much means never enough.
The world is changing and growing pretty quickly, and in many ways it's growing differently than in times past. We'll just have to wait and see how things pan out over there, I guess.

It's the inevitability of this kind of rubbish that is why posting about Russia is a bad idea in the first place. Good grief.

If only the Establishment was that clever.

Maybe what you are saying is true, maybe not. Just remember that this is a forum dedicated to all types of talk. News, information, opinions, etc...
Rubbish? I don't believe so, but I'd be happy to hear your contrary opinion on the matter.
I'm convinced that the public is never allowed access to the complete truth during wartime. So, let's wait and see what happens...
It's meant to be family friendly, no politics, etc. But I'm as guilty as you in that regard.
As far as substance:
1. I don't think there was an "idea" at all. I think the invasion of Iraq, which I opposed from the outset, was a horrendously misguided action, with some of the consequences you describe but not with the goal you describe, and of course you have no proof of that. We, the USA, miscalculated and overreached believing that a more stable, friendly and democratic regime would result. We were naive and aggressive and should have kept the f#ck out.
2. There is no "they" with any such organized and sinister world view, at least not in the West. The West was not in agreement at the time and can barely agree on how to tie shoelaces, let alone on dominating the world and eradicating Islam. To me, that is just sheer silliness.
3. Putin's unforgivable actions in Russia and Ukraine have absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with what's going on in the Middle East, and even he isn't making that claim as an excuse. And he can't given that Russia's campaign to bomb Chechnya back to the Sone Age started before 9/11..
Yes, we live in a glass house and shouldn't throw stones recklessly, but not every topic of conversation should have to lead to some broad based conspiracy claim or self-blaiming for all of the world's ills.

Glad to hear what you have to say, bro.As far as knowing what is in the minds of those directly involved in the middle east struggle, it's all conjecture as far as I'm concerned. You've heard my opinion and now I've heard yours. I see the middle east's descent into chaos and civil war as part of a strategy designed to help destroy beligerent middle eastern governments *from within* and/or to weaken their ability to unify.
The motives for creating strife in the middle east might have as much to do with self-defense as the desire to gain control, but I find it hard to believe that none of our leadership here had a clue about what might eventually happen in Iraq and the rest of the middle east if Iraq was forcibly subdued. "They" knew full well that the people in those regions are family-oriented, not government-oriented. Democracy, if embraced at all, would surely mean something different to them than it would to us and I think that they (or, "we") were counting on that as part of their (our?) defense/acquisition strategy.

Sorry for the rough edges. I'm not always as measured as I should be in real life, let alone while on the internet! ;-)

... Bingo!
It's schlongs on the table and self-indulgent preening on both sides.
It's a shame both sides can't put their collective hippopotamic egos aside and work together instead of this idiotic "them versus us" mentality.
Russia is its own master and I don't see anything which is particularly troubling.
If countries focused on getting there own houses in order there would be far less trouble in the world.
Having sensible priorities is essential but many countries get mired off on ridiculous tangents half a world away while the palace at home burns around them unabated.
Life's good, enjoy it :)
