in some local grocery stores for one premium local roaster's product. Most are around 13-15 bucks/pound. We're lucky in having, in this smallish town, seven or eight roasters. Competition has one quality guy's product selling for under $10/pound, but his selection is minimal.
Can't complain too much, however. Even @ 16/lb., it works out to a little over 32 cents a cup...

Using good water is important. I'm not particular about my coffee, so tap water is fine. I pollute it with cream and sugar anyway. But I make my tea (loose leaf) with spring water and usually drink it unadulterated. I've noticed tap water produced a sort of scum on the surface.

Starbucks Medium Blend pods cost me $35 for 54 each. Not cheap, but it's quick and always a fresh cup. I only drink two cups in the morning daily. It's nice getting that quick cup (30 seconds) when I have to scoot out the door by 5:15 AM five days a week.
My wife can drink the stuff till damned near bedtime and still sleep. Talk about buildin up a tolerance!
See ya. Dave
I normally mail order all my coffee as local roasters do not date their packages. I pay about $14 per 12 oz. My current favorite is Number 46 from CounterCultureCoffee.com
I recommend an Espro Press for making fine coffee.
Double filtration means almost no sediment in your coffee.
Medium size makes two cups.
Insulated stainless steel keeps the second cup hot for your enjoyment.
Just get a good fresh roast to your liking (4 to 10 days old), grind the beans yourself for a french press, boil the correct amount of water, remove the water from the heat and count to 30, pour the water onto the coffee in the Espro Press, set a timer for 4 minutes...
Best coffee you'll ever have.
I own three french presses and this is the best by far!
Depending on the beans and quantity I buy.

How do you manage home roasting?
Oven? Stovetop? (whirly type popcorn popper!) OR?
Can you listen for 1st and 2nd 'crack'?
How good is process control? By that I mean, can you get the same roast repeatably?
Too much is never enough
I'm using a Behmor roaster. I roast a pound at a time. Yes I listen for the cracks, I can't really tell by looking at the beans. It's pretty consistent. When I get new beans, I have to stand by the roaster the first time to find the correct time. Once I do that, it's the same every time I roast those beans. I usually stop it just before the second crack (city+).

I roast small amounts a few times a week. All done in less than ten minutes. Let it breathe overnight and grind it the morning.
It's like cooking the same meal over and over. You get pretty good at roasting after a while.

found some very tasty Sumatra at World Market (Cost Plus back in the day). You get an honest 1.5 pounds for 9.99 a bag. She found it while perusing their many jams and odd food goodies one day. Buy 1o bags and you get a free one...
do freshness very well. It's a critical factor w/beans. I buy beans roasted THE DAY I buy them. Big difference.
special...and anal as well.
Not those 12 ounce bags currently marketed by most coffee chains.
with there being a plethora of roasters and options.
North Beach used to be the Coffee Capitol of SF with its
heavily Italian-American population and caffe's galore but
now there are roasters & cafes throughout town.I find it amusing that the "pour over" is so so hip and trendy.
That's how I've made my coffee at home for over 30 years
after trying various machines, French press, et al.Had the same cheap ass, plastic melitta brewer for 25 years.
There's still some red discernible beneath the coffee stains.
And if everything was as well built as our 25 YO Krups

Colombia!
I've never understood the attraction to coffee. It tastes horrible, has no nutrition, stains your teeth, irritates the digestive system, etc., but mostly it tastes horrible. Tried it a couple of times decades ago, at the suggestion of friends. Yuck. Never again. And then, there are people who "need" their coffee/caffeine fix in order to, in their usual words, "get started in the morning". Sad. All I need to "get started in the morning" is a good night's sleep and to not eat a big meal late in the evening. I don't need, or want, to be hopped up on some stimulant to get me through the day.On the upside, if it's hot and you happen to spill it on yourself at a McDonald's, you can make a whole bunch of money.
Edit: After posting, now an animated ad for Nespresso came up. F-ing crap.

Its an aquired taste for sure. I like it; started drinking coffee back in the hospital night shift era. Whether I like it as an addiction or taste is a blurry line, as is the definition itself.
But whatever reason, I enjoy black coffee. The thought of adding cream and sugar to 2 cups per day raises all kinds of red danger flags.
you are lucky. I can't function without coffee in the morning. it is addiction. There's a great show documentary which aired on CNBC called "The Coffee Addiction" you should check it out, pretty good story CNBC put together. I put the link below if you are interested.
I usually make instant coffee on the weekends, and get coffee in a deli during the work week.
what is a good coffee machine? also there's a starbucks near me so I can buy beans and have them ground, but I don't know how much to put in, how to have them ground, etc...
I have this Hamilton Beach Brewstation which essentially is 8 cups of coffee with a place to put a cup and it pours into the cup, every coffee I make with that tastes like crap.
So I've been making instant because of my bad experience.
bonavita ceramic container w/Melitta filters.
Local Charbucks grande black is $2.39. Ouch.
and ambience. Lots of folks use coffee shops as social gathering spots, for small business meetings, for study places, for "alone time" spots.
