And I wonder how good Germany would have been w/out its best player, Mueller? Not saying Neymar would have saved the day, but if you watched Brazil, you saw he was the only scoring threat: Fred and Hulk pretty much disappeared.
Nobody in the german team is irreplaceable.
You could replace any two or three players without affecting the result unduly.
The closest Germany ever got to a non-replaceable player was Franz Beckenbauer who played 103 times between '65 and '77 scoring a measly 14 goals but scoring wasn't his job anyway.
He started his career as a centre forward but played as a midfielder and centre back.
This made him the perfect libero (free man) who assumed any position, always the one the opposition least wanted him to play.
Only the great John Charles was ever anywhere near as versatile a player as Beckenbauer.
The Castrol Index evaluates every player according to their position and is used to produce the All-Star Team. Neither Messi nor Neymar made the cut while the german contingent consisted of
Toni Kroos (overall best player of the tournament), Neuer, Hummels, Lahm and Müller ie 5 of the 11 best players.
