Allowed only for Alaskan Natives, these salmon catchers were invented by indigenous Northwest peoples way back. Anchored against the current, the current turns the wheel, scooping up fish. Show once or twice a day to empty out the fish holder. Voila! Feast for kings. Or maybe feast of kings, depending on which species is running.
Note the shopping cart employed as an impromptu fish basket. Genius.

It is not for Alaskan native culture only. Any Alaska resident can get a permit for Copper River salmon. I know as I will be on a fish wheel next week in Chitna.
They are outstanding tasting fish and most in the wheel will be silver bright as they are running upstream right out of the salt from Cordova. (for the most part).
The ocean/fresh water thing comes into play after they have spent some time in fresh water and start to "turn". If fresh I seriously doubt you could tell the difference between a salt or fresh water red. I am lucky enough to have spent a lot of time eating them out of both salt and fresh water.
The bright red color of dying sockeyes is at the end of it's life cycle and even brown bears get real selective on what they will chow down on when nearing the end of their amazing life cycle.
Native Americans up in British Columbia tried to sell me some illegally but I refused. I hear the red spawning salmon are not as tasty is ocean caught.
they are, the crappier the taste. They are beat up and weak from the upstream push and are sometimes bruised and not nearly as tasty as they are from the sea.
Just a look at those dying salmon and you can tell they won't taste good
