The constant race to be first on the air with an "exclusive" without checking facts means they deserve every bit of abuse they can get.

What Prisoners was trying to get across in a quick way was that the news media such as CNN and others are not always credible and they don't screen a thing when there is some type of crisis. They let anyone on the air as a witness and give that person credibility in an instant. There are producers on my local sports station that do a better job than most of these 24 hour news programs at figuring someone out in a few minutes to know if they are legit.
I don't watch these stations very often to be honest. I get my news from my homepage online, AP, NPR, the Post, ... But what happened yesterday, the guy was supposedly U.S. military but was stationed near Kiev? That's hundreds of miles away and he saw what happened, an eye witness? Maybe the producers were on lunch or in meetings. But give Prisoners a break since there is a breakdown with the (breaking News) and their trying to be first with everything.
So stupid
Cheers,

Fox "News" has reported items from The Onion as news.
how politically motivated criticism of mainstream news has led people now to put their trust in bloggers, people who have stated biases, for their "news?"
News wasn't perfect, but it was and is a hell of a lot better than the alternatives.

While I agree with your response, I don't think it naturally follows from Prisoner's post. That is, I don't see him condemning the MSM in all respects or pushing the blogosphere as an alternative, at least not in this posts (or others).
The race to exclusivity has in fact lead to a lot of reckless new reporting in the MSM, including in the NYT not to long ago.
But yes, the MSM is a helluva lot more reliable than at least most of the alternatives out there. IMNSHO, that is. :-)

I wasn't condemning all journalists, just the talking heads on TV and in the control booth who aren't even aware they're being made a fool of.
long term?
There always has been pressure to scoop the competition. Happens in all competitive industries. With the severe cuts in news budgeting, it isn't surprising we don't have a lot more. Still, the errors in MSM are a heck of a lot less than in the blogosphere where accuracy appears less frequently than do the errors in MSM.
Again, the tens of thousands of MSM reporting that entirely is accurate and timely is never commented upon; only the very occasional lapses are mentioned--- perhaps because they are so infrequent. Something that is common, i.e. exaggerations and inaccuracies of a certain leading "news" organization founded by an ideologue and run by another, never is news, in itself: it's expected.

Because reporting the news accurately is the entire reason they exist in the first place. I don't think congratulations are due for a person or organizaton for doing what is expected. "Hey there bus driver...you made all of your required stops within the allotted time and you didn't leave anyone stranded.....Good job!"
your whole life makes one or two poor stops, do you immediately say ALL bus drivers and bus systems are bad?
I'd kind of hope not.
... and exclamatory reporting isn't easy to identify. But it's easy to know when it's crossed, and it usually is. On one hand, its news reported by journalists; on the other it's a business to make money run by businessmen. The businessmen usually own the news outlet, so their moneymaking priorities are top concern. What sells the most news is emotion, so that becomes the delivery format. Emotional content is injected with spin and hyped opinion, so the news delivery is never "straight", regardless of journalists' professional intentions.
The worst offenders tend to be televised, but even the straighter newspaper format is being sucked into this game, as they go online. Competing for viewers. Example: look at how the LA Times recently changed their online display from a newspaper look to a surfer's smorgasbord. Sport Illustrated recently did the same, now resembling Slate, OZY, HuffPo, and many others.
Hype and opinion=emotion and alarm=viewership=money.
News is the platform. Money is the product.
My point wasn't to discredit the long-established fraternity of professional journalists whose history of documenting world events is invaluable. The spread of instant communication however has in many cases pushed accuracy and even basic truths to the back seat in favor of being the first to report it. Once the info is out, regardless of it being correct or not , the damage has been done. The bombing during the Atlanta Olympics is one example: the man named and whose picture was broadcast turned out to be completely innocent. Pranks like these should continue until the decision makers value truth and accuracy over bragging rights.
Wow, you will no doubt be blasted again for writing something as reasonable as this!
Assuming of course they're able to muster up enough energy to set aside their Cheetos and leave mom's basement.
This makes it clear how little care is given to reporting the truth vs being first with the "news". All these callers do is point that out.
I was at work today, ignoring the news as usual. Really? what nonsense some people subject themselves to.
Here's a crazy insane idea! Read a book.
.. or "we have nothing new to report" and yet, many sit there staring in awe.
Look Americans invented the dreadful news as entertainment formant: deal with it.
and canadians invented trivial. So, what's your point?
Always insulted by historical facts I see.
And, you can't stand the truth either, eh?
maybe it's time for you two to stop posting to each other.
Fax mentis incendium gloria cultum, et cetera, et cetera...
Memo bis punitor delicatum! It's all there, black and white,
clear as crystal! Blah, blah, and so on and so forth ...
Blown out of the sky from a blast of wind from Howard Sterns ass. She obviously either wasn't listening or wasn't comprehending, I think the latter.
