I knocked it back, thinking it was trying to get me to accept the version that was unstable.

Actually, according to this article, it was repaired on the 21st, or the day before yesterday,in these parts.
Adobe can not repair Real Player plugin, and as it appears Real Plugin was and still is the cause of conflict.
Funny that all of my searches did not find that solution.
I just checked it again, as soon as Real Player is loaded Flash does not work in Firefox?
I can't comment on RealPlayer, as I don't use it, but here's a reference on Adobe.com
