I've fielded this before, but here we go, as Jackie Gleason used to say, again:
How about a NEWBIE Forum?
Just as Cable has a NBT rule, Newbie could have a NBASA (no being a superior asshole) rule. This in not to exclude the general, interested public from "General" or any other page, but it is an opportunity to say "Go over to Newbie" the same way someone might say "Search in Vintage" right now.
While it may not seem so to those of us who take a break from audio magazines only to power up audio web sites when we're not listening to our audio rigs, this hobby dearly needs new blood. And I've personally seen so many instances of newbie abuse on this site (even been a part of it, I say with a shamed face) that, even after being ignored on this issue before, I feel compelled to bring it up again.
And while I'm pushing my luck, here's another idea I'd like to discuss: For those who subscribe at a given amount, a perfect bound "Best of Audio Asylum" hard copy magazine, once per year.
It could be broken into segments like:
Best technical guidance
Best sources for DYI
And so on. You get the drill. Plus, the site could sell ad space to the usual suspects for what would be a coffee table 'keeper' of a once-a-year publication that PAID for ITSELF with a suitably inflated "membership fee".
Or stick with yo-yos. And watching poor, potential newbies that could well represent the next generation of audiophile get creamed. See if I care.
Ever seen the film 'Deliverence' with Burt Reynolds and some other guys in a canoo?
Newbies should be treated in exactly the same way by us local redneck natives IMO.
They come round here to the wilds of audioland their fancy ways, naive outlook on equipment, and expect to be tolerated, nay accepted, without a squeak of dissent from those of us who regard this cybernetic simulation as a haven from life's tedium?
No way says I!
Round 'em up, strip 'em naked and make 'em "SQUEAL LIKE A PIG BOY! YEE HA!"
PS. No offense to our four legged friends intended obviously......
or maybe I just don't get what you are proposing.
The newbies join forum boards to learn, so they are going to want to mingle with the experienced regulars, and the experienced regulars are not going to want to keep rehashing the same topics over and over, so I would suspect they would stay away from a newbie board.
I think dealers, and manufacturers may be more helpful than the regular audiophile, and visit a new. forum because they are in the business and being helpful shows they have a commitment of caring. But I think newbies would want to learn from people who simply have had experience, a variety.
There was no intention to create a gehetto. Just a sort of, well, a sort of antipode to the "Pro" Asylum. If that makes ANY sense, that's the best way I can express it.
Best to The Killer.
audiophile is born in the ghetto,
and his momma cries....
An Antiasylum would be cool...how about anticentral. Here people could only post things of the highest virtue...nevermind.
THIS is why I blow so much time strait-jacketed! Tolkien and Pirsig...the only books I've ever read more than once...three times for The Hobbit and Trilogy, 4 times for Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance. And...for you book collector's, my copy of Zen is a first!
Please move this to a more appropriate venue....maybe Music Lane, where it may actually be appreciated.
I think I hear the faint sound of a whip cracking???
Note: a joke (for the humor impaired)
I can see the other "segmentation" side of this. On the other hand, I see plenty of posts with subject lines like "Speaker wire" that never get answered (and that's often the best outcome).
This would require a moderator and some regulars willing to help out. Those high and mighty types, who I assume were born with their wealth of audio wisdom, could just stay away.
Then again, it could actually draw the flame throwers. See, both sides...
I think we should be nice to newbies, modulo their own behavior, in general.
It seems to me that the implication of a newbies forum is that it would be a place where the blind and deaf could be led by the clueless -- or vice versa.
And, once again, I will hold up the Vinyl forum as the most consistently newbie-friendly place in the Asylum. I don't know why the regulars there are some damn helpful -- more TT owners will just keep the rest of us from being able to score decent records at an estate sale for $1.
Let 'em learn the hard way, like WE did! Let 'em make all the dumb, expensive, frustrating mistakes we did! Dumb clucks will probably go out and buy CD PLAYERS! hahahhahhahh...
To no avail, so here it goes...
Maybe we could have "Pig Day" at Central, and may I also be so immodest to suggest that it be soon, because pigs do deserve our appreciation! I also propose that there be no more pig ball pictures because that is NOT the kind of immodesty I can condone!
*Note: a joke (for the humor impaired)
can't we just discuss it rationally? do we have to involve the board? after all, if you love pigs so very much, should you not love all of the pig? besides, it took me a long time to find just the right pig ball pic.
It's the lewd pose, and obsene size that I find so disturbing! What, did you do a google search for giant pig balls? I think we would all like to know. By the way, just why would giant pig balls cross your mind? Is there something we should know?
I would vote it as one of the most obsene animal pics this poor innocent has ever seen! And no this is NOT an invitation for everyone to try to top Syg. Clearly he is the winner. Don't let the flow of testosterone make you post something you will later regret.
(Note: Just a joke for the humor impaired)
Nice of you to share your "private stock" with us!
We'll call it ode to a pig's ass.
You are a very friendly guy.
We now know way too much about you!

If KP is cross dressing. He waits until Mrs. Piggy is at the grocery store and writes sexy posts with the wife's moniker.
besides a like minded individual? He is a lot of work, but the rewards are plentiful!
Besides, I think people would disgree that cooking LP's is sexy!
By the way, I used to do that with my friends when I was little. Of course they were kiddie records, and I did suffer the consequences.
Furthermore, I think girls are just as capable of "sexy" talk!
Don't you think? How are the dogs barking today Denzio?
but to the Some Like It Hot revelation.
My dogs are very tired from barking, they are resting under the porch this morning. They are old dogs, still very virile and vigorous, but rest is a necessity, otherwise they just might fall asleep mid-bark. Woof woof.
