I have been using the LL 9206 at 1:20 very happily with my OC9 cartridge for many years. Soon, I will be transitioning to a Benz Gullwing SLR with 0.35 mV of output. My phono stage has 38 db of gain. Will the LL 9206 match up well with the new cart or would you recommend a different step-up?
Thank you,
Mike

The OC9 has nearly the same rated output as the Benz cartridge quoted, so I don't see much of a problem with carrying on as before with the 1:20 turns ratio. However, you should listen and see if the frequency balance is to your taste. If not, you should check the loading and see what you can do. Benz recommends greater than 400 ohms and the LL9206 at 1:20 with a normal phono stage input impedance of 47K gives about 450 ohms load, so that's a good place to start.

Thanks, Kevin. Can you help me with the math? I thought 47K gave me about 118 ohms at 1:20. I was planning to modify my phono pre with loads higher than 47K since I have heard the cart prefers loads in the 470 to 750 ohm range. That means a load of 188k to 300K by my calculation.

Oops, in my absentmindedness, I saw 1:20 as 20dB step-up. Sorry! Your calculations are correct. To get a higher load impedance, you will have to change the input resistor in the phono preamp from the traditional 47K to a higher value. That will be OK for the phono preamp, because the DC resistance of the LL9206 shunted the 47K resistor (and after changing, the new higher value resistor) in any case.
