Return to K&K Audio / Lundahl Transformers
108.76.246.135
Just hooked up my newly constructed Maxxed Phono Pre, sound is truly wonderful from the first listen.
A few notes.
1) I had no difficulties building this kit as a non-EE person. I have done a few other kits (AN Kits EL34 amp, and DAC, and an EL84 SE amp from kits). You just have to be able to know what the parts are, and have a magnifying glass to read some of the semiconductors, and smaller parts.
2) I ordered the silver step up transformers, which would be difficult in other systems
3) I got the "newest" kit, with a revision 5 board. During the month that I played with the kit, Kevin worked up another upgrade, and got it to me quickly enough that I only had to remove a couple of resistors, and drill a couple of holes in the chassis to make happen. Great service from Kevin, he clearly cares about each kit. I will let him introduce this upgrade, I am sure that I don't understand it well enough to explain/discuss it.
Recommended if you want a fully integrated, flexible, terrific phono-pre, with all the bells and whistles, as simple or fancy as you want to pay for.

Thanks for the construction tips and the kind words!
Since it's mentioned above, it's time to announce here that there will soon be an upgrade for all of the previous versions of the K&K Audio Phono Preamplifier. This upgrade addresses the input stage and provides a BIG improvement in the overall performance of the preamp. I will go into the sonic improvements when the details are displayed on the K&K Audio webpage. Bones13 was the first to receive the upgrade in kit form and was able to install it in his mostly completed kit with no problems. A couple of others have to report their experiences back and we have to get one of the essential components of the upgrade, an assembled/tested surface mount CCS board, back from the guys who do SM boards for us and then we will be ready to offer these.
I've been told that I am understated about my endorsements of my designs, and perhaps I will be here, too. However, I have to say that this relatively minor change in the circuit provides so much more sonic value than I anticipated when I conceived of the change. Get it for your K&K Audio phono preamp and we'll see if you agree!

Looking forward to checking this out, sounds like a great upgrade. (Then again, all the upgrades so far have been excellent too!)

Having run the MOSFETs in the input stage of my beta Sonus for a couple of months now I must concur: a big improvement. Kevin should be congradulated for his diligence in seeking improvements for his products and making them available to his customers at reasonable cost.
Agreed, it is great that this (and other K&K) product(s) continues to get constantly improved, and at a super reasonable cost too. We are fortunate Kevin is so excellent about this sort of thing. It sounds like a great upgrade!

Just got done installing these latest modifications last night, will give it a listen over the next few days and report back. Overall, a pretty straightforward upgrade, nothing too crazy, very DIY-able.
