My response was not meant to address adequate volume. I was only commenting on the difference between the unbalanced and balanced connections. Whether you have adequate volume depends on the gain of the phono preamp. There is a gain switch for each channel (or soldered jumpers, depending on the board revision level) near the front of the main PC board that allows for high or low gain (6dB difference). Check that.

I checked the switches & they were set on high gain. The volume is sufficient using the rca connections. I want to use the xlr connections. It seams to about a 6 db difference. Is this normal?

The output level from the phono preamp at the RCA outputs in equal to the level out of the XLR outputs. If you can provide me with or point me to a schematic of your amplifier, I will try to understand why the output levels are different when connected to the amplifier inputs.

First I want to thank you for your efforts. If you go to freeinfosociety.com/electronics/schemview.php?id=498 you will see the schematic.
Thanks
