I've got an Otari MX5050 MKIII 2 1/4 r2r machine and want to run a direct signal from the heads to a McIntosh C22 preamp. Currently there is not enough gain with the tape head input alone and I was wondering if your transformers would work well with it. The C22 has a 1mohm input impedence and I'm not sure the output of the tape heads yet but am looking for the data. Any recommendations? I have a LL9206 step up for a MC cart and was considering trying it with the tape machine. Bad idea?
Do also bear in mind that if you take the outputs right off the heads, you will need to provide equalization. On the 5050, this is a very worth wile path to take. A SUT to ease the duties of the preamp isn't a bad idea.
If you do recable for direct output, take care to shield the leads and ground the shield properly.
Unfortunately, this isn't an easy question to answer. It depends on the reproduce head's impedance, among other things. I think that you have the right idea about just trying it to see what happens.

Hi Kevin, thanks for the quick response. Other than head impedence, what other data would you need?
DC resistance and nominal output level at 250nWebers flux
