Anyone own a K&K preamp (linestage)? If so, let's hear your comments on it...What did it beat out? What are your general thoughts? Whether you built it or got it complete from K&K let's hear it.
Yes, I'm thinking of getting one...currently have a "big name" tube pre.
Thanks-
I recently had Kevin Carter build me a Line stage to replace my TVC (w/ S & B iron) that he too built for me two years ago. I am using a K&K phono stage and a non K&K custom made GM70 monos. I have had a good deal of time to run a head-to-head comparison with the line stage and the TVC...bottom line the line stage is a more sophisticated sound. The TVC gives a very detailed and polite sound with no noise. But the line stage has less grain, less high freq roll-off, bigger more balanced soundstage. The TVC, the Voice was more forward and the accompanying music was more in the background
I hope this is helpful
Last night I replaced the two 6N6p tubes in my line stage.
I had started wondering if I was getting tired of my system, maybe something is wrong and it occurred to me that these tubes are known to not have a long life.
When I got home I replaced them and enjoyed listening to my system for a good three hours. I was quite amazed and pleased by how much I had been missing. I am thinking that from here on I will replace them every six months just to be safe.
As an aside to the fellow who is asking about this device, I am not one to take my gear to others houses or audition strange products in my house. I find all of that useless and one's assessment probably has more to do with how badly you want something new at that moment.
I have listened to quite a few amplification stages in my thirty eight years of being obsessed with music and music reproduction.
I am greatly pleased with my line stage, especially now that it has been renewed. I am embarrassed to say I did not realize how good it was/is!
If you have unlimited funds I guess for five or six thousand dollars you could get something that is "better" and in a MUCH fancier box, but the only thing I could be sure of is that the box would be fancier.
Dave Davenport is a true gentleman of the audio business and if you decide to use his product in your system you will be pleased with your choice from a sonic standpoint and support.
Does anyone offer "selected" 6N6p's? Is the one with the "-i" suffix any better? Would having closer matched "halves" be worthwhile? I would like to know.
As few outlets as there are for these tubes; so far, all I can find are EBAY sellers, I am surprised K&K does not have these listed for sale.
Bye,
Rick McInnis
I do sell the tubes that go into my kits, but only to kit owners. I don't list them on my website to avoid other inquiries. I apologize for the inconvenience of this, but it avoids lots of time spent answering e-mails that don't really serve to make the business successful.Kevin Carter

Rick,
Thanks for the info. I'm not interested in having the most beautiful preamp. I'm interested in having the most for my money as well as the "best" to me. The K&K was HIGHLY recommended so I just want to get feedback from owners like yourself.
