The diode improves the sound by some unknown (to me) means. It is an idea that I first saw on a webpage authored by an Australian guy named Dennis Grimwood. Using the diode in that location makes for more sonic clarity with a tetrode/pentode that is connected for triode operation. The usual connection fo the suppressor grid is to the cathode, although others connect it to the plate.

Kevin,
Yet another question..... Is it best to locate the TVC between the source and grid of 4P1L or between the 4P1L OT and amp? In my case, the source is a CD/SACD or DAC and the amps I use are either a direct coupled 2A3 DHT or a Pass Labs First Watt clone of some flavor. My TVC is older S&B 102s.
I also have one of the older DACTs I may try for level control.
Jim
It's a toss-up, in my view, without listening to both arrangements to determine which proves to be the better sounding. A significant advantage that the TX-102 installed after the line stage has is attenuation of line stage noise with attenuation of music signal. This is most needed when one has high sensitivity speakers...
