You aren't familiar with the Kurasawa movie, Kagemusha, the shadow warrior, one assumes?

Hi Geoff...what are you using to get -20 degrees?. I didn't
think home freezers get much below 0. I have an upright
that I can check....not frost-free.
I have a number of Commercial (sears chest freezers) units that keep -20F, we usually run them at -20 C (or about -4 F), but sometimes they drift...
If you want to get below that you will either need Dry Ice for -78,
You can add acetone or denatured alcohol to get -85, or a unit with two compressors...
Liquid nitrogen vapor phase will get you an honest -195 C

I have an old 1950's vintage GE fridge with separate top freezer. Definitely not frost free. I just checked it. Thermostat says -10. Still not as cold as the infamous ice bowl when the actual temps here in Green Bay were -13.
Maybe Geoff wasn't that far off.
Whoops, I might have been overly enthusiastic. I just stuck a thermostat in there and it's actually only 0 F. It looks like the one that's built in is kaput. Which just goes to show you don't need very low temperatures to achieve good results. In fact I'm willing to bet a cuppa Joe temperate is not really the primary issue.
Cool! ..maybe not cool..(sorry)...make that kewl :) Well if that's
the case, I may as well try it. If you want really cold....but
hard to control temps...you can get a pure CO2 fire extinguisher
and blast away...I think if you blast in a cloth bag, you'll collect
dry ice in it. I could just take my radio to the local Sub-Zero
ice cream store...they blast liquid nitrogen into the mixing bowl
and you've got ice cream in 5 seconds.

As I said, temperature is not really an issue. It's only a psychological issue. ;-).

You psyched yourself out. ;-)

Check out surplus centers for military
I picked up -100 frig for $100.
Want to do semi true cryo. pack your stuff in dry ice in a styrofoam cooler and then go to your local gas supplier ( you know acetylene helium, etc.) and buy a flask of liquid nitrogen and pour it into the cooler with dry ice, : seal with duck tape for a week
DANGER ! liquid nitrogen freezes instantly on contact and when evaporating displaces 1000 times its volume in air. Do NOT attempt except in very well ventilated rooms, and make sure you know what the hell you're ding.
You should take down the mirror between your speakers because it makes you look old :-)
And now it's time for some serious shopping. My Atma-Sphere gear neers to be re-tubed and I have an equipment stand that needs a new turntable sitting on top. I'll be back when I run out of money which should be about 5 minutes.
Hey, I checked out your freezer tweaks on the Stereophile forum and even registered. But I heard that JA watches that place like a hawk and thought better not stir the pot.
