was going to make 6" deep sandboxes for purposes of vertical decoupling, putting most gear on neuance or BDR shelves on top the sand.
any experiences here? is this belt & suspenders and a waste of effort?
(i'm also planning on using stillpoints between the gear and the neuance / BDR)

I used to have Bright Star's sandbox circa 1995 and used the super hard DH Cones under the whole sandbox as well as under the component. It was right after that I migrated over to pneumatic iso devices and never looked back. So much with these things depends on implementation, I.e. How and with what you interface the component to the stand and how you interface the stand to the floor. Sidebar: Mag lev stands are easy to construct and work pretty freaking well.

Nice to hear from you.
So, you're digging mag-lev stuff, eh? Yeah, some of the mag-lev type footers sure seem cool. Mag-lev stands, though? That sounds very cool, indeed.
Have you DIY'd such stands, and if so, how did you do it?
Let's just say I dug it twenty years ago. MG lev stands are just multiple mag lev footers, no?
I have done the same as you, building 6" deep MDF sand boxes (or cat boxes, as we kitty-lovers call them) and then employing various footers and maple boards, etc., to find the best sonic combo of support. It takes lots of trial and error.
But you'll never know how the combo sounds until you try it, unfortunately, and sometimes they fail badly. Just pick yourself up and start from scratch and keep working at it. It's the guys and gals who work the hardest that get the best sound (no comment on mega multi-millionaires, of course. They don't count.)
Best of luck.
You might want to try posting in the "Tweaks Asylum", just for your information. You'll get noticed there a lot more than here, I'm afraid.

I'm unclear about what mean by "inner shelf". If you mean the plinth that mounts on the sand, I used MDF, same stuff as I made the boxes out of. But in the future I will be employing some extra maple (butcher block) platforms in the boxes to see if they are sonically better than the MDF, but not for a while. Right now it is the MDF on the sand.
If you mean anything else, I am sorry for my inability to understand your query; please try and re-state it, or give me a little more description of what you meant by "inner shelf"?
Thanks!
i'll be trying the BDR vs some 1.5" baltic birch and old neuance shelves, see what works where...
