...The new year starts at the winter solstice.
Since years have no physical meaning outside of the oscillation of the earth about the sun, clearly that's the datum that matters. The rest are historical and political artifacts.
But the object of wishing each other well for the next cycle is not one requiring a high degree of specificity.
