"...You're all welcome to stay for the next set...we're going to play all the same tunes, but in different keys..." -Count Basie
No-one's got that cached have they? I missed it, just trying to imagine it...
I dug out the link from the browser history, I enjoyed looking at them as an armchair outing.

to lift his cables off the floor! :-)
I see what they're talking about.

It isn't hard to do. ;-)Actually, Ted finally convinced me that his decision to delete was a judicious use of his powers.
Crazy thing is, it stimulated some of the best, on topic, discussion we've seen around here in a good while IMO.
Anyone else care to post a link to the Golden Sound room from the Audio Federation show coverage? There are tweaks galore visible in those pictures worthy of either productive discussion or the venting of moral outrage depending upon your disposition I guess. I suppose I'd be eligible to do so myself, but I'm not sure how that would go over.

I'm sorry I missed that, but with posts disappearing in rabid (that's not a misspelling...) succession hear -including Ted's!?!?! - it's sure hard to keep up!

...asking appropriate questions and the like. The planets ALMOST came into alignment it seems.
Rather the text that went with the original posting. At least I hope so as I too found the pictures fun.
Rick
Can you give me the gist?
As for the photos, it's like a little game just looking for the tweaks. Geoff's been holding out on me I see, did you notice the Clever Little Wristwatch atop the oppo player? Just kidding, but I wouldn't be surprised if it served some sort of purpose.
Yes it served some sort of purpose. The relationship of the "arms" to the "dial" and to each other allows one to tell "time." ;)
...and possibly sinister purpose, again depending on your disposition, like making sound sound better. ;-)
Actually I mention this because a Clever Little Wristwatch is within the realm of possibility, but seemingly a solution in search of a problem for the most part. I suppose manufacturers could use them to surreptitiously improve the sound of their rooms at audio shows.
Excellent word! Someone I know mentioned he detected a small, innocent-looking red cable tie on one of the cables or cords in the photos. :-)And what can be done for products that cannot be observed visually? heh, heh
And what of those bowls of water?
the dealers will know what time it is.
The dial is actually covered with an orange dot.

You mean to tell me that thing can't even tell the doggone time?
Since Geoff says I am totally off base, I see no reason why I need withhold the following experimentation.
I bought a couple of Advance brand alarm clocks: about $9.95 list at my local drug store. They need a AA battery which is not provided.
I placed two magnets,, neodymium types since I had them, on the face with another on the rear. The round plates on the CLC are magnets, BTW, just weak ones. I used the neodymium ones simply because I had them on hand, and they can be purchased at various electronic surplus stores, like All, Marlin P Jones, etc. although their stock will vary. IIRC I paid roughly about a $1 apiece for the magnets.
Using the neodymium magnets makes experimentation a bit more interesting as they are so powerful that will stick to each other through the thickness of the clock or your hand , for that matter. They are easily removable and thus the same clock can also serve as a control.
Magnets in place I simply opened the battery lid and stuck in a battery. Experimenting with various starting points gave me an audible difference in sound (interestingly I could easily hear this in my car system with a factory system (Mazda B4000 truck).
I also took a piece of EMI shielding material magnetically permeable and experimented with the sheet. Placing the sheet under the clock between the clock and the dash showed a reduction in the audible effect: less dynamic range and lower S/N ratio. Placing the mat, which is magnetic, BTW, places less emphasis on the attacks and a bit more tone quality audible on the follow through of a note.
The wrapping of ERS cloth around the clock similarly reduces the sonic effect heard.
FYI, make what you want of it.

Starting points as in time of day or location of magnets?Does the clock have to be running to have an effect?
Does the clock have an effect without the magnets?
Do the the magnets do anything without the clock?
Cool stuff, Rick
Clock has to be running; easy to verify by leaving the battery tray open and flicking the battery n and out.
Without the magnet depending on when you have inserted the magnets the effect will vary, usually with a much smaller almost negligible effect.
Magnets do have an effect depending where you place them relative t your system. I believe I have discussed this before, particularly in relation to steel equipment racks. Placing magnets on the 'rungs' of a steel rack seems to confine any induction generated by transformers. Doesn't work at all on TT racks as the magnets extend the magnetic field and it definitely adversely affects the cartridge.
As for starting of the clock, time of day is not of importance. Rather, with the increasing dependence on the national time clock and the adherence of many time pieces to that clock (available from the internet, BTW). starting of the clock seems to be dependent on the interval of a few second time frame. To be honest, I simply flicked the battery in and out and listened. I suspect that I could display the national time clock and start the clock at an irrational number or seconds after some arbitrary start point, but I haven't tried that.
I was actually sitting in my truck checking out the the clock after purchase and decided to try experimenting with start points of the the clock. after several attempts thee definitely was one point where it did sound noticeably better. Taking it into the home confirmed the observation. As posted previously, the digital clocks are all digital counters, decade counters essentially based on a 32/36 kHz crystal oscillation.
at any rate, my little LCD screen definitely looks to have a sharper more defined image with better color saturation (My main audio system is down at the moment).
Have fun.
Oh yeah I assume magnetic polarity will have some effect so you may want to try flipping the magnets around on the clock. My gaussmeter and compass are likewise in storage so I can't measure anything right now. It is interesting to note that on some clock faces the ultra strong neodymium magnets will actually distort the time patterns of the clock face, turning on or off various LCD segments.

Remember when magnets were the anathema of wrist watches? Guess I'm dating myself, but at least I'm a cheap date. So cheap that I went out and looked at my meager magnet collection stuck to the air handler in the garage. I took the best physical candidate and propped it up against the LCD face of my desk clock. It's one of those that checks in with WWVL at night but should otherwise be about the same as any other LCD clock I'd think. Couldn't hear any difference so I reversed it and still couldn't. Magnet may be too weak, will pick up a stronger one next time I'm in the HW store. It's even in the window so that should add points...
Rick
Where do you then place these clock(s)?
You can guess. I'm also getting the impression that some posts may have come and gone that I missed. Still and all, I enjoyed the virtual visit.
R.
...but oh well, probably wasn't too important whatever it was.
BTW, I truly appreciate your vibe. Bad vibrations need not apply as far as I'm concerned.
was wondering how long it would last. Not long I guess - it was a little blatent.
Even for a forum dedicated to same. I think management somehow prefers the lions den dynamic currently en vogue.
self promotion, free advertising, and such.
Just a hunch...
