Would appreciate experienced people's opinion regarding Altec 288G vs best JBLs vs Tad 4002/3.
Follow Ups:
My favourite is the Vitavox S2 which is to my ears gentler and more natural than the TAD drivers. I haven't heard Altec 288's on Altec horns though or any of the field coil drivers like WE555 or 594.
IMO the 288 is the best compression driver I've heard for reproduction of the midrange, better than the setups I've heard with 2" throat JBLs and TADs. The 288 is certainly soft on the high frequencies though and many people would think they need either EQ or a tweeter though personally I left them alone and tolerated the soft highs.Of course all this is greatly effected by the horn used, I've only heard and used 288s on Altec multicell horns. But then 288s on 1005s were the absolutely finest midrange reproduction I've heard so I never worried about what 288s would sound like on other horns.
Hi,
I know "very well" Altec 288, 299..., JBL, Tad 2001, 4001, Onken...
But for me the "best" is the Klangfilm Kl-L302 with its Klangfilm horn (it looks like a tractrix horn but in fact it is less long).
