In Reply to: RE: If using a 511 for mid ~400-3KHz - what horn/WG type for the tweeter ? posted by freddyi on October 27, 2016 at 14:42:37
Friends don't let friends use 511s (especially below, say, 800-900 Hz) -- there are too many other options (even inexpensive ones) that are widely felt to sound (much) better ;-)
511 fans are few and far between. Did you see the little chat below on sort of this topic (see link below)?

Hi mhardy6647,
I'm just curious if you'd tell me what horn and driver (makes & models) are in the photo you posted? Also how far back do you have to sit from them?
Thanks...

On loan from a generous local (Northern New England) hifi guru :-)I am having a little challenge integrating them with the woofer sections of the 604Es (the 2" JBL drivers, on these horns, are, not surprisingly, considerably more sensitive!) but it doesn't stop me from foolin' around with them.
I may go the simple, inelegantly "nuclear" route of just padding the compression drivers down with adjustable 16 ohm variable L-pads as an interim 'solution'

511 despite being a cowbell, is a squeaky clean horn at 500Hz - probably cleaner than a short horn such as SM120.
I have Emilar horn or horns (one missing in mess or shed) - one next to me has no markings but looks identical to your "EH-500" one sidewall rough w. pock-marks - mouth is ~5.75" x 15.5" - has a 908-8B - (I might have a 175 in good shape - ?)

I have a pair and played with them (crossed over much higher -- used the ML XO). They sounded nice and BIG, I'll say that for them (with 802D drivers installed).
Jury's still out on the Community horns/ JBL 5441s. Largely for lack of a block of time to really listen to 'em.
Also, right now, I am running them off the ML XOs as well, -- because I am profoundly lazy. I do want to try them with the JBL N600 (600 Hz) XOs that I just happen to have.
PS the Emilar photo I posted ain't mine :-P I do have an identical Emilar horn, though, on loan from Mr. Roberts. Gotta try that out one of these days, too. Nothin' wrong with mono...
all the best,

I've used 511 in La Scala type setups with K55V til one of my cat's pulled an amp's input an fried the amp, K55 and APT150 - they were good for AC/DC - maybe not something "delicate"

I used 511's with 802D's crossed at 500 (bi-amped) for many years. They compared very favorably with live symphony events playing the same piece. I used a tweeter above 8k to help with the rolled off highs. I think the 511 is still one of the better 500Hz horns available. I have tried a handful of others since, but none beat the 511. I did apply auto undercoating to the outside of mine to reduce ringing. Worked very well. They had to sit in the garage for a month for the smell to go away, though.
