Having looked in the net (Google) and not really finding what I'm looking for
What are the sensitivity of the big altec VOT A7 systems?
Thanks
Lawrence
Follow Ups:
102dB/1m is the usual figure given. Altec called it 101dB at four feet.

Those had a passive Xover with an L-Pad HF attenuator.
Where is that set when the sensitivity measurement is made?
Just curious how that comes into play.I always thought they sounded best with the HF control set a little less than halfway.
I assume it was with the HF and LF level matched. The link says measured with pink noise 500-3kHz, which means with the 500 version it's all HF horn, the 800 mostly HF horn, and they'd have to be padded quite a bit to be at only 101dB/4ft. I've seen SPL charts for the A7, they all show the HF/LF sections level matched.
With my controls set for best frequency response 50 to 10k I get minimum 101 db / watt. 802 / 811 / 416, 16 ohm.
As far as settings on the xovers, that can vary from xover to xover, Altec made changes along the way. The settings will also depend on your room and your system balance.
cool - I have 811, 511 and some Altec drivers laying around - maybe for fun i can mate a 511/806 combo with EV's Sentry IV
here's a graph I got a long time ago from Paul Klipsch of La Scala (and K-horn) vs a VOT
I'd wonder how a VOT would sound side by side in an A-B comparison with LA Scala?

The VOT sounds better on the low end than the LaScala. More extended. I like the Altec 802 and 511 combo better than the mid horn on the LaScala as well.
my K-horn has an "indistinct" region - not sure if a timing issue between the bass and midhorn - or something else. 511b makes a good midhorn in 3-way horn setfups. What are the coil and cap values on your VOT crossovers? - any attenuation?

my gut guess would be for half space ~98dB in the area below the horn's cutoff rising somewhere to 105dBand this input of an A7 with port area blocked to 1/2 I nabbed somewhere shows pretty much that region - not sure if that's a 515 or 416
put a modern HF on the horn, damp the horn, etc. IIRC Tom Danley has some suggestions for this classic

Hi Freddyi,
I've heard of people mention and praise Danley's VOTT mods but nobody can recall any specifics. Do you have any info you can share?
Regards,
David

no - i didn't keep up with Tom's posts - if he's mentioned specifics then those should be pretty easy to find - or he'll chime in and give them. Its sounds like he really gets the old A7 going - I've only heard one A7 on one channel in the early 1970's in a small room of the late Don Nicol's "High Fidelity Center" in Huntington, WV and that particular A7 sounded like its highs only went to around 10K. .I was only around 6 or 7 feet back so things didn't fully integrate
here's one post from 2009 Getting around to the subject but
I can't find anything concrete - but here's some lore on Using light bulbs for protection
