The FE-207E, at least, seemed better balanced to me -- but they've been OOP for quite a while.
Don't know about modern (much less, more expensive!) Fostex FRs, unfortunately.

206 166 are for horn loading and will sound off if not used in such 207 was for ported designs. All have similar response and sound best with toe in to get balanced on and off axis response. Much of what people complain about in these drivers is expecting too much performance and from improper use. Since a fullrange is appealing to DIY types many mess up are going online mentioning poor sound or expecting the wee 4 inch to rock the world.
Kloss---Have you used the 208 sigma and what are your impressions and what is your cabinet of choice?
Way back in the Bottlehead Paramour days everyone was using the 104E in the Fostex designed enclosure. Mine had Lovely mids and soundstage and coherence but an AM Radio above 5-600 Hz. Fun to build, too.
Later, Transmission Lines came along for the 166 and 208 that sounded good all the way up with correction circuits but lacking dynamics.
For Jazz and singer/songwriter stuff, darn good. Mahler or Metal, not so much.
nice pic ---Is that a BK cabinet then with earlier Fostex? Interesting re/lack of dynamics with the 208--to verify that was not with a BLH cabinet but as you said a transmission line?
Should have been 103E, 4" driver. The cabinet is the Fostex recommended for that driver. Don't know about the Bks.
e.g., I didn't much care for the FE-166E in Cain & Cain Abbys -- too shrill for my delicate ears ;-)
all the best,

fe166 not best in voigts and Terrys round baffle was cool but not optimal. I had 3 pair back in the day helped Terry get his 1st dealer thus the 3 pair I had to buy lol Nagaokas design is a good bit better and allows the lowly fe166e-en to shine.
Is the pic Nagaoka design? Is not the BK20, et al based somewhat closely on that? Has this type of set up run its course for you ? What would you consider the way to go ---amp is 2a3 Burgess custom build. Ive used Decware , Hoyt (Omega) and looking for a fresh start as have sold the Decwares.
206 is one of the best for Karlson applications - - it does have an ~2K6 peak but I'm not sure if I'd bother notching.

I always thought of the K like a front and BLH design. When I built my wee pair I optimized that aspect of it. I still have a 1950s pair for 12s about and a K tube for 1 inch comp. Use them at times.
if you have a 206 laying around and time to muck, try the 206 in one of your K12
