i got 2 pairs 828
both original one i made more dead with bracings and so
this gives maybe a more correct sound
but i like the unbraced pair more
i like the colour it gives to the sound its like there is more air and breath
its more lively and musical.

I can comprehend that. Even though I only heard them fill range less horns in the garage. They were much livelier for sure. Spooky real at one point with male voice from radio interview I was listening to.
idlers and tubes....life is good
Maybe the unbraced VOTT is acting like a BBC style lossy cabinet.

I think a lot of stuff from the era when these were designed relied on a cabinet that sung along so to speak. For a modern concept look at the Saba Reso. A resonant cabinet with a Russian driver from the 50's. I had some of the Saba full range drivers, very much like lowther in dynamics and really nice tone. Never built the reso, I lost them and a ton of other goodies in a house fire.

I never heard of Saba until I read your post. They made some interesting drivers (see link).

That's very interesting. You're the first person that prefers the sound of an unbraced 828 box. It's all about personal taste I suppose. I will keep a open mind when I get around putting my VOT together. Thanks for the input.

David
Yes i like the unbraced box better.
When i buy the first altec a7 it was because of the sound i find them ugly and big
but the sound was very good.
(that was then now i find it a very attractive speakers) i have now the a5 with multi cell horns
that is also a very big upgrade from te 511 or 811!
When i buy the a7 i listen a time to them and i read on the internet that the cabinet must be braced and must more dead, mass loading or double walls for better sound.
So i did this and i found it a good in the first place i liked it it was more hifi.
But after a while i missed the musicality the sound that made me buy the a7 was gone.
all was good notting wrong but the spontaneity wasn't there anymore
it was all perfect but a little death and to polite
Then i buy some empty original cabinets and put in the drivers and it was back
the barking the screaming the air the colour all you don't want in hifi
but sounds more like real music.
But that is only my experience, ears , taste, electronics ,room acoustics and the combination of that
don't get this as the truth and if you brace it mass load it and you find it better
what can i say if you like it it is good and the way you must go.
enjoy the music on your own way.
There is no best for anyone.
and experimenting your own things is the only way.
Ohh no, my audio mentor and friend, Dennis Fraker, ( who has owned MANY MANY VOTTs as he was in that theatre busines ) LIKES the sound of a stock box when not played super loud, and he advised me to NOT add bracing. But SOMETHING needs to be done to stabilize the flimsy 5/8ths wood on an early 825 box. A rebuild from scratch, with Baltic birch, 2 inch thick on the TOP and 1 inch all other places, and long spikes, would be nice to try one day.
I developed my own solution - I listened and ended up doing MASS LOADING of my 825 TOTALLY STOCK enclosures. Each of the red concrete blocks were 16.6 pounds, and I added blocks - all BY EAR 'till "I" liked it, without killing the sound by over-damping and over-bracing. I even use the STOCK reflex port. Notice, I had to mass load my crossovers, to get them to sound their best. 12 to 14 pounds got them into their sweet spot. I mass load my Type 45 SET amp also.
But, I have a VERY WELL wired pair of VOTTs. For example, to each woofer, I use TWO times 12 AWG Mil Spec wire, which is the equivalent of 9 AWG, to each terminal / polarity. And, I use NO physical / mechanical connectors to my 515Bs and 802Ds, I Wonder-SOLDER the speaker leads to the terminals that holds the voice coil wires. Crossover is all hard wired and soldered. Amp-to-speaker leads are THREE times 12 AWG for each polarity.
Don't have it "all" together yet, just got the 825 enclosures Dec. 2015. But, I am getting closer. I use a WELL WIRED well made Type 45 DC SET amp, and its very dynamic and fun. Need a few more months to dial it in.
Everything matters, ALTEC tells the truth on set up, VERY demanding of user, to optimize it, but- very responsive !!
Nice stuff, glad to have it.

Horn less encumbered. Crossover closer view.
