I'm curious what's the best cost-no-object 15" coax driver available, whether it be a vintage driver or one made today and what's best somewhat reasonably priced 15" coax driver whether it be a vintage driver or one made today?

Best? I dunno; probably not by any objective criteria -- but I still enjoy the bejabbers out of them...
all the best,

And now channeling Monty Python then, I pose questions three;
Why limited to a 15?
How far do you sit from the speakers?
When you drive the right and left speaker with the same signal, would you prefer a "wall of sound" or a strong dead center phantom?
Hi Tom!
I limited it to a 15" coax, because I didn't know of many 18" or larger coaxes. Although I believe to truly answer your question correctly, I would have to hear how the speakers in question would sound when playing the music I listen to, I believe when I drove the right and left speaker with the same signal, I'd prefer a strong dead center phantom over a "wall of sound"! But then why do you ask that question?

Hi Tom
I ask because the strong dead center phantom requires a specific type of radiation and geometry and is the harder condition to achieve. All other things being equal, the source that radiates a simple spherical or portion of a spherical pattern is the one more likely to disappear as a right and left source while producing the phantom illusion (and probably why you lean towards single drivers as I recall) .
In addition to magnitude and phase and so on, it is very little appreciated but we can hear how some things about sound is radiated as well and this imparts clues as to the speakers location which is in conflict or interferes with the image that is in the recording. It is why the larger and more dispersed the speakers drivers are, the less coherent sounding it is. It isn't because you can't DSP it flat mag&phase somewhere, it's because what's wrong can only be fixed in one spot in space..
So far as the coax, I use a number of them at work BUT I have sampled most of the candidates and measured them before picking which are used. Conceptually they are a perfect solution to several problems but the transition between upper and lower is RARELY a smooth one and it is difficult to get them to align into what measures / radiates like / sounds like "a single source" but it is possible.
If your game to try something with a driver I am playing with contact me off list.
Hey, I was just working down there at mouse land working on a large scale "Stereo", you sit 400 feet from R&L speakers, opens in a couple months.
Tom
A 15" 2-way coax will not have a good dispersion pattern.
Although, if you listen primarily on-axis, and have a fairly acoustically dead room, it might work. You should consider a 10" or maybe 12" coax. Depending on your LF desires, you may then want to add a woofer. Depending on your HF desires, you may also want to add a tweeter.
:)
Thanks to all who responded! I recently heard a pair of Spatial Audio M4's over a friends home and they definitely superseded what my Sachikos with PS220-8 drivers can do! Hence my question...

I have no idea about how one would implement the crossover but would it be feasible to get a used Altec 604 and put them in an OB with an Altec 515 (for bass duty)? Say... make the crossover at somewhere between 600-800hz between the 604 & 515? Or is a 416 better suited for OB?
Just tossing out an idea if one was so inclined.....might be a lot cheaper if one was good at making their own crossover. Again... I have no idea on how difficult it would be.
Cheers
Frank M
I have the Spatial M4's and they are quite remarkable. They use a 12" coax on top and Clayton's done a great job with them. But I'd love to hear the M3's with the 15" coax!
If anyone's at all interested, see my review here:
It was hearing Clayton's M4's at a friends house that caused the coax bug to bite me... and hard!

http://www.bmsspeakers.com/index.php?id=bms_15cn890 I have used these Altecs Tannoys etc and I feel these are some of the better available. I do have a soft spot for the 18in sunlight engineering se308 I had Gizmos pair and they were very enjoyable. For affordable best value that I have not explored yet.
Cost no object: Tannoy 3833GG (Price new: ???)
Budget: Probably the Oberton 15CX (Price new: £197+tax)
Over here a pair of Obertons costs a little more than a recone kit for one of the Tannoys but I'm not sure if they have distribution in North America. They are made in Bulgaria.
604's are Fine drivers. The Tannoys DO sound/work better though imo.
Fostexs are great for beside ones' Computer monitor.
Not a helluvalot else though.
Sound like a kids' Transistor radio when in the same room as Tannoys.
Yes, I have Both :-)
I have only owned and listened to Altec 604-8K's in 620 cabs. I have a friend that recently acquired some Tannoy 15" "Gold" DC's, can't remember the cabinet off hand, but he has a bevy of quality vintage, modern tube and SS amps to tango with them. I have always been curious of how the DC Tannoy's sound and I am looking forward to giving them a listen soon!
I am sure there will be many others who will chime in on your post/ I noticed you had a "double Ben" flavored cab, with Fostex's. I started off with the cheaper FE166 in a diy BK-16 (non kit) cabs, and by the time I was going to attempt to build a double ben like cab, I built a Bib.
Then found my 604k's. Talk about a difference in weight and response/dynamics! The larger types of Coax's just blew the Fostexs away with ease. Plus I did feel I needed the help of a subwoofer any longer.
I still have my Fostexs, my son is wanting a stereo in his room, so I am going build him a little mltl for him and match them up with some spare gear I have lying around.
If you get a chance to hear a pair of the larger coax/duplex/dc speakers, I would and determine if the meet/exceed what your current Fostex's are performing at.
I currently no longer own my old 604's, had to pay for a divorce. But, a few months after I sold my 604's, and got over the loss, a pair of one owner Altec 19's were offered to me for $400/pr. I had the cash and grabbed them as soon as I can.
The Altec 604-8g gets my vote in 620A cabinets or Altec model 17. Update the crossovers with oil caps and live in bliss.
Altec 604 or the Tannoy DC 15 is very nice as well.
