Biasing the capacitors is (was?) said to improve their sound. I can't say I've heard this story in recent years, but I'll bet someone here has more details than I do. In fact I'll bet there is more than one opinion on the idea itself :^)
Follow Ups:
JBL statement products like the latest Everests are charge coupled (biassing of the capacitors).
Those who have uprated the older studio monitors with new charge coupled crossovers generally claim to hear improvement. There's a fair bit of info regarding this topic on the Lancing Heritage Forum
I just installed a pair of K2's in a customer's house.I listened to them for a couple of hours without the Batteries installed.
Then I looked at the installation pack that was sitting on the coffee table in front of me and thought "wtf is this 9 volt battery for?"
I installed the batteries in the speakers and resumed listening. It was immediately obvious how the sound became less recessed and veiled.
That is my experience with a charge-coupled crossover.
