Greetings, my audio brothers! I need some help with direction on my evolving Onken project. The basic question is: how does the 604 perform in the Onken 360?
A couple of years ago I had the Onkens built for my 416a and I've gone through a number of different horns/drivers and two listening rooms. Now, my room is just too small at 14.5' x 19' for the Onken with 311-90 and 288g. It sounds good but doesn't come together as well as the 811/802 did with the Onken 416.
I'm running EV Trx15 now just to see how it sounds, and it's pretty good. It makes me think that the 604 may be just right.
What do you think?
Thanks,
Doug

The 604/605 sound pretty good in the Electro-Voice Regency cabinet, a type of rear-loaded horn.
IMO :-) Onkens are best suited to smaller drivers. Before the resurrection (sort of) by the Japanese.. these were largely forgotten ignored. Dare We say "superceeded" :-) designs
I think that if you like Onkens and 604s that it would work out pretty good.
No first hand experience with the combo myself, just what I have read on google.
I came close to building the Onkens myself, I forget what swayed me but I ultimately decided to design some bass reflex cabinets instead.
Perhaps I figured the boxes I designed would go deeper in bass region and have a little more accuracy.
The 360l Onken is just barely big enough. It is hard to get bass out of these 604.
Infamous sockpuppet
I have no clue about Onken. Never heard of it.But, I am familiar with the Altec 604-8G, and a little bit with earlier incarnations.
Be aware that the 604 is representative of a directional speaker. You really have to be in a "sweet area" to appreciate it. In the early/mid 70s, they were often seen/heard in studio control rooms, where the listener was within a few feet of left/right in a very "dead" room. If you can replicate that type of listening situation, you might love 'em.
Edit: They also sound great in a larger and more live room, such as a nightclub dance floor.

Their cabinet design from the 1950's. It is now known as the 'Onken' design in reference to a Japanese speaker manufacturer who used the Jensen plans for various speaker builds.
Yes, 604's will deliver extremely accurate bass with this design, though not lots of bass. The corner loaded Jensen Ultraflex will deliver more bass when placed at the corners of a room.
