I've not used anything as elaborate as you're suggesting, but I have used sand boxes for good effect with electronics. I like the marine plywood idea - I used regular hardwood with a regular plywood bottom and a floating cutting board on top to support the equip. What I learned really fast is that "dry sand" from the local hardware store is not dry at all - took forever and a warped breadboard before the sand was really dry. Marine ply would have helped.

Thanks for the response. The sand I've used with different speakers I've built is children's play sand from Home Depot. It is never dry, but I clean up a large area of the concrete parking pad beside my house. I spread the sand very thinly and let it cook under the hot Georgia sun for a day or two stirring occasionally. Drys right up.
Yep, that would do it!! When I did it I lived in humid Columbus Ohio and bought the same sand which, in my basement, too 3 months to dry out! Live and learn! :-)
