In Reply to: RE: Need feedback/info on GPA 902 & Radian 475PB... posted by djk on July 19, 2015 at 22:53:47
Sorry DJK but you sound like a skipping record. Every time someone needs
advise and mentions Radian you chime in with your once established opinion.
When are you starting to realize that there has been no reliability issues
since about 15 years. Emilar, POE, Renkus Heinz, Radian all are
creations from Jonas Renkus who has left Altec for this very reason that
his development of the newer drivers where not accepted.
He showed them the middle finger and brought out his own drivers that are
more refined at the top end than any of the Altecs and have been working
in thousands of PA cabinets reliably ever since.
Jonas had a reason to do it the way he did it and when it's done right
there are no issues with reliability. A few bad batches from Radian
won't change this.Greets,
Klaus

Have they changed the way the voice-coil former is attached to the dome?
I didn't think so.
Why should they change anything if there are no reliability issues anymore?
Most of the time it only is a matter of the right glue composition or the amount applied and all is good again.
No matter what the problem was, it has been solved.
I will take the high flux versions of the Radians/Emilars over Altec/GPA
units any day due to their better hf behavior.
Klaus
separated by 800 gauss. The Radian 475PB @ 18,800 gauss and the GPA 902-8 @18,000 gauss.I don't much about this but does 800 gauss make that big a difference on the HF extension/control? or I should say does it automatically equate to better smoother sound quality in that driver?
Thanks

All I was trying to say was that the hf of the stronger flux radians sound better than on the weaker.
The more flux you put on a given design the stronger the hf gets.
I was not comparing the flux of the Altecs to the Radians.
The Radians just sound better in the HF region due to a more sophisticated design.
Most audiophiles get all exited when they her the word Alnico but a well
designed driver like the creations for Jonas Renkus can even be better.
I got a pair of Yamaha JA6681b that no Altec comes close to and it is
a simple 1" exit Ceramic magnet driver.
Klaus
The Yamaha JA6681b is 35mm (1.4") throat, with 17,500 gauss.
No sorry it's not about what the spec sheets say.
Open one up and you will discover what it really is.
The exit of the driver ist exactly 1". From there on they just
extended the driver to look like an exquisite old format Alnico thingy.
Got to the DIY Audio forum thread and find my post where I showed
Mr. LeCleach the inerts of my 6681b because he was also trying to correct
me with spec sheet numbers as you did.
He even thought that it was an Alnico driver. Obviously he never opened
his driver further than taking the back cover off.
Klaus
From the specs on it.
Very similar to the Altec 288, but with BeCu fingers for the suspension.
I have one sitting on the floor next to me.
too bad they don't make them anymore and if someone has them the diaphragm are impossible to get now. Glad you were able to grab some.
Thanks for the info.
