pro jbl's lately?
Follow Ups:
I tried to listen to the M2 system at Guitar Center in north Dallas a couple of months ago, but none of the three "pro sound employees" could figure how they were connected into the console. One employee went to go help another customer. He was the lucky one, 'cause he wasn't exposed to the excrutiatingly loud HF screech which was the only sound the other two "pro sound employees" managed to get out of the speakers.
My right ear hurt for the rest of the day and into the evening.
I sincerely hope they fried the tweeter - maybe then the "manager" will get a clue about running that department. It's a mess.
The M2 has connections for the tweeter and connections for the woofer.
There are no straps provided.
The salesman didn't understand this and hooked up only the tweeters.

Let's review...
You're saying that I'm lucky that I only got 100 dB of screech, and not 100 dB of "woof" as well?
So my legal case won't be, um, heard?
;)
Listening to any tweeter all by itself will sound bad.
On the other hand, if they were really playing it a 100db that's gonna hurt!
I would reserve judgement until I could hear both the tweeter and the woofer at 85db with some good jazz.

Oh, they weren't "playing it", it was an accident (they were TRYING to play it).Like fingernails on a chalkboard, only MUCH louder.
Dumbasses.

Listening to the modest mrx 515s now. Nice with vintage equipment. Lots of fun.
2435. they are tough to beat.
I really like the 2435 on a Le Cleac'h horn. I use it from 800Hz to ~10kHz on a 385Hz horn, T=1.4.
Hi John.
Good to see you have the 2435 up and running.
I'm curious how to hear how you have chosen to filter it,
and what you have implemented above and below.
Any time aligned upper bass solutions? Pictures?
My implementation was first order on both ends.
Never had a proper LeCleach, and found myself quite
sensitive to the upper end breakup. Eventually I chose
the path of alnico and phenolics, as I'm sure John will
never forget. (John build me an amazing 4" throat horn
adaptor to allow me to play a JBL2482 backwards through an
Oris 150.)
Hi Mats,
I'm using a JBL 2225 in a sealed box for the mid bass at the moment and a JBL Sub 1500 sealed for the bass. Then the 2435 for the mids and a JBL2402 that I made a custom LeCleac'h horn and phase plug for. See pic below.
I used DSP to do the crossover, so I don't know off hand what filters I used to get the response I did, but the acoustic slopes that I corrected the response to was:
80Hz 4th order Linkwitz-Riley between sub and
800Hz 8th order LR
9000Hz 2nd order LR to tweeter, then 2k 2nd order BW HP on tweeter
This gives an okay response, but there are dips in the listening window and power response around the two crossovers due to the vertical spacing.
I just have a slight amount of time delay to get everything to line up. But what I'm looking at changing to is a crossover that gives me smoother listening window and power response. The overlap is a bit wider between the 2435 and the 2402 and the vertical polar gets a bit weird due to this, but I'm thinking it mist still sound better. The acoustic slopes for this are:
Tweeter:
9k 1st BW HP
2.5k 2nd BW HP
Mid:
6k 2nd BW LP
15k 1st BW LP
770 6th LR HP
Low mid:
550Hz 6th LR LP
80Hz 4th LR HP
This relies to some degree on then eq'ing the overall response to get flat response through the crossovers. The results should be basically smooth listening window and power response due to mostly eliminating the sharp vertical dips in the polar response. I still need to try it, but at the moment I'm working on building the second side of the system. Then I'll convert to a miniDSP system with FIR filtering and better HF amps. I'd add screen shots of the measurements, but it seems I can only add the one image. Weird...
Especially on the 2384 horn.
