Also, what type of cabinet were the OP's 604s in?

What I am getting at, is most duplex's are in relatively tiny boxes.
A larger box/lower alignment will balance out the shout with rumble.
I have 604E with Alnico magnets, but I like to think the GPA's are close enough that you would yield similar benefits with a larger box.
16 cubic foot cubic will do the trick, check out my thread for details if you haven't seen it already.

Well, yes, I have/had considered building better boxes for the 604's, including the design referred to here, thank you. I have them in Karlson K-15's, as stated above. According to Freddy and others, this is a decent combo, it will reproduce down to (guessing) 60hz flat, and -3db at (guessing again) 40hz. With the 16' box you suggest, you improve on that some.
But -3db at 30hz is still "different" than -0db at 25hz.
I appreciate the difference. Some others may too, still others wouldn't.
I hear ya.
It was a battle just to get that -3db @ 30Hz.
It is the compromise I had to make to work well with my minimalistic setup for the time being.

I think the best part of "minimal" is using just one pair of tube amps,
and then trying different ones to see what works better. Also you have fewer XO parts overall. I view the biamping as a compromise, no doubt.
I have found however that contrary to older beliefs about biamping,
you don't have to have the same gain structure in each amp to track linearly with a volume control. And, I'll admit that when turning up a bit,
say for some rock music, I can adjust a little for recordings that either are bass heavy (mixed for ghetto blasters) or for live recordings that are often bass shy for the normal reasons associated with recording live performances. I try Not to, but I now have a bass/tone control.
