I currently run a Altec A7-500 system and have been thinking about going instead with an Altec 290E/805B and Jensen 302 tweeter. My amps OPT is 16ohm and the woofer and tweeter are 16ohm.
I can calculate the crossover network for a 3-way speaker but will there be a problem with the 4ohm 290E and 16ohm OPT?

I'm just throwing this out there since you mentioned Altec 290. I have a MINT Altec 290-4G which I'll probably never use. I bought it to use in a prototype P.A. speaker which I never built.
I have only one, not two. Reply here if you'd like to talk further.

Depends on the efficiency of the tweeter, if it is too high relative to the other drivers then you are in business, just use a series resistor to get it up to 16 ohms, use an Lpad if further attenuation is required.
You will need an autoformer, no big deal otherwise.
