In Reply to: RE: I have a problem ... i have a question on HE speakers but regarding amps to drive them posted by hottattoo on July 05, 2014 at 15:36:00
Hi and thanks a lot for the valuable suggestion
Main issue is active or passive xover ... this is the question.
I would much prefer the passive, one amp and that is all
But i have got opinions that makes me understand that the active solution is much much better ... actually it is THE solution.
It is possible to have very precise and sharp cuts
Maybe i am wrong but it must be much more popular in high quality systems
I could used just a very tiny amp for the compression driver
Even something like the old t-amp ... or similar
I have already one somewhere
The t-amp has big limits on the bass .. but for the range above could be jsut fine and with power to spare
And i have already one ...
I just need two PA speakers with decent woofers to use for the bass and as a stand for the compression drivers
Now if ony Pyle would answer ... why they did not mention the measurements conditions it is weird to me ...
Just say ... response measured at the open throat without horn ... and i will save on horns.
Thanks a lot.
Kind regards,
bg

Active is only better if the active crossover is very good. If it is a cheap one it will ruin the sound far more than a decent passive crossover.
The only one that I had which was worthwhile was an Accuphase F25. I tried others, including the Bryston BP10 but only the Accuphase is relatively transparent and even it was worse in the end than a good passive xover.
You are treading into an area I think you lack the knowledge and skills to make a convincing sounding speaker and I fear you will end up blaming other things than the mess you made.
Hi and thanks again for the valuable advice
I thought the Bryston were quite good by the way
the question is than an active xover i can buy
A passive crossover i have to design and build myself. Big difference.
That could be end up in a real mess.
I would like to know people with HE speakers which solution they prefer.
Or which is the most common.
Moreover the active one by the way needs another amp. That is sure.
Kind regards,
bg
